  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ProFoto 3rd Party Light Sources

Jokers have a Profoto adapter ;)

Of course they're way more than that tungsten head and not much less than Profoto's new HMI's.

Thanks Chris, looks like I'll bite the $1K per head bullet and get the ProFotos. I have a ton of their flash equip so would like to reuse for continuous. Your thoughts (which I highly regard) on HMI vs Incan for Epic work?

The biggest issue is... what sort of light sources do you most often need to integrate your lighting into? Do you do studio work where you totally control the lighting or are you on location and having to deal with existing ambient ranging from daylight to florescent? I often find myself in mixed lighting locations and it seems that my average color temperature is often balancing out to around 4200k for the ambient. So... I'm frequently doing the broad strokes (through silks and bounces) with strobe that has 1/4 or 1/2 CTO on it and then picking up local areas with Dedos that have 1/4 CTB. I have no issues mixing sources and just gel them to match. If you need to deal mostly with daylight then the tungsten sources are gonna have you banging your head against the wall. Putting 1/2 or Full CTB on those things is gonna knock them down to nothin.

Now look at HMI. The shit is way pricier but 3-5 times more efficient. So... for example, one of the new Profoto 800 watt HMI's is gonna give you 3 times the output of their 1000 watt tungsten heads. Gives you a lot to think about, eh?

I've got 10 of their D1 mono blocks and am trying to justify a move to constant light sources. I'm thinking 4 of the Profoto 800 HMIs, 4 Arri L7C LED fresnels and a couple Kino Divas would be an awesome kit. Of course that's about 38k.... LoL. Time to go shoot some more!

Disclaimer: I just finished a margarita bigger than my head.

Great info Chris! Thank you for the time and effort
