Sanjin you are right... but the problem is, that you not always have the possibility to get two of a batch, because for example you have a feature with one camera with say 40 shooting days. And now you have 5 days spreaded over the hole time, where you need a second cam. That one which is from the same batch is on another job... so you dont get from the rental that one you want because its rented somewhere or it is on repair or service.... so you get the cam which is free to go out in the rental.... if i have a job where we have always two cams then I could choose these two that I want, but thats not always the case....

Professional means: at a grade for expert work.

A professional tool should be designed to perform a specific task or group of tasks to specification with a very low degree of failure.

In video, there is consumer, the ever expanding Pro-sumer, and professional. But here's the thing, if I were in charge of Red's marketing I'd not play up 'Professional Cameras' as much as I'd play up 'Digital Cinema Cameras'. When I pitch prospective clients on using the Red over a video competitor the first thing I say is: It's not video, it's digital cinema...

since we passed the machines and are now talking about humans,

Professional means you have talent and experience and you stand behind what you do 100%.

That is what you and me and others would like to see. It's an ideal, not reality.

The definition of professional is someone who do a profession to live. That's all.
A doctor, a lawyer, an electrician, are usually expectet to be decent (in their job as anyone else in his own job), not extraordinary; sometimes they are decent, sometimes they are less than decent. Sometimes, but less often, they are extraordinary.

How many professionals are there? Since I have no idea at all, let's say 1 billion of professionals on the planet. If what you said were true concerning talent and experience and 100% dedication, there wouldn't be anyone but great doctors, great lawyers and great everyone everywhere, while really in so many professions - beginning with those related to arts and media, we see an average of mediocrity, while assholes are not uncommon at all.

there is absolutely no difference between professionals and amateurs and dogs, other than that professionals, usually do not make mistakes doing some things, because they know how to do those things, and they are used to do those things

This does not mean they do it better than others, but only that they do not usuall repeat the same stupid errors, since they know or are supposed to know.

But hey, anyone one who knows something will be better at it than someone who doesn't. To be in a profession for decades is really no guarantee of anything but being expected to only not do the most basic mistakes and certailny be able to do what you are are paid for with a minimum of quality, which by the way sometimes needs to be precisely established by a law or in a contract, otherwise it would be a complete far west for any client. The myth of the professional god goes on. Sounds like a soviet superhero of pure fantasy, or is western couterpart.
Cartoons.
Professionals are sometimes good but often tired people more often than not and are not sinonimous of artists. I see them as nothing more than necessary costs because you cannot do everything yourself and working surrounded by geniuses would probably produce a disaster.

Professional is a floating point of reputation determined by the customer and/or peers.

We profess to make professional cameras. I'd love to hear your take on what exactly professional means to you.

Jim

Hard won know-how carefully applied. A true professional may do things pretty easily from all appearances, but he is actually taking care with each little bit that it is just right.

I'm extremely late to this thread, but so far I have not found anyone making this point (apologies if I have missed it):

Professional is a product that is not only excellent, but has great backup. If the product is down for any length of time, it should be possible to borrow / hire at reasonable cost a replacement to ensure mnimum downtime.

20 years ago, when I chose my first professional (still) camera system, I avoided Nikon becuse their repair turnaround was 2 weeks. Canon guaranteed 48 hours.

everything in the world is made up except the laws of physics, so professional means whatever the hell you say it means and it means something different to everyone

You resurrected this thread for this?????

BTW, the laws of physics are made up too.
