If I were prepping for a feature to start end of July, beginning of August, would it be more prudent to plan for a RED purchase or just rent? I would love to own, and would be able to amoratize it quickly, but if I go too far down that path too quickly, I might end up making things more difficult in the long run if the production of Reds just isn't in place.

so...

How many have been ordered so far and whats the planned date for the last one thats been ordered? If I were to place an order in the next few weeks, would it be more likely than not to have camera in hand a few weeks before the shoot, or is that just not going to happen?

I understand, production delays, supplier shortcommings, rabbies infested aliens all could delay the planned schedule. If it comes to that I can quickly find a backup rental, but if it would never get shipped in time, I might as well plan for the rental now.

also I understand I can buy cameras from an early reservationist at a premium, but I would rather buy 'factory direct' given unscrupulous people on the internet. Not who I would want to hinge this ficticious film on. do people sell their reservations, still allowing me to purchase direct from the company, but jumping up in reservation number?

Hypothetically, if you were prepping for a shoot in July/August, I'd expect that you have many other things to work on (what role in the planning are you?) and that the Red schedule would be the least of your worries.

If you want to plan a film shoot, I suggest you plan on renting a camera and concentrate on the film. If you want to own a Red camera, I suggest you order one.

You should rent for the movie, for now.
If you want to buy, You can buy from earlier reservationists for a premium of $1000, I heard.

"early reservationist" opportunities aside, theres a current timeframe of 6-8 months delivery. So you'd plan on the hot side, especially regarding that delays are always possible and you or your staff might still not be trained with it. Plan with a rental would be my suggest.
