Does anyone think a sub-forum, thread, sticky for producers of Red productions would be helpful?

I think there is a lot to do to promote informations aimed at the producers.

Some act like children in front of the Christmas tree when they see the cost or the camera and then run away when we start speaking about the workflow.

Definitly yes.

No. I say we pile them all up in a heap and burn them, and all the marketing guys.

producers...

producers...

Actually, I think its a great idea - especially since one of our clients is actually the Producer's Guild of America (http://new.producersguild.org/) and everyone there seems pretty clueless about the camera -in whole or in part. We would love to see more info available to the members of the PGA (and the rest of the world) that was in a palatable format - maybe a what it is and what it isn't document?

Threads are great for geeks like us - people who live and breath art and technology - but are counterintuitive to getting a decision maker responsible for sticking their neck out on the line to endorse the concept for their production. I think the short testimonial films on the RED home page go a long way towards overcoming that, but there is still much to be done. Would that Jim or Ted would come to a PGA event with kit and talk about it - then you could clear the fog some more. Also, I do realise there is a world outside of the US - but since I live in NYC, that is my focus. If you live elsewhere, help them figure out how to reach out to the producers in your neighborhood.

best,

Drew

Thats why we have Ted.. he loves talking to producers, and they love talking to him. :)

I am personally shocked! Dare I say offended... At this unbelievable disregard for the vibrant traditions, and principle of artist exploration by Producers. I remember a day when Writers and Directors, would work for Hookers, and few lines of top grade blow... What has the world come to. Speaking on behalf of G.O.B.S.S.P (Guild Of Black Hearted Soul Sucking Producers) You better check your shitty attitude, if you ever want to see you cat alive again....(:

For Producers the pendulum swings between cost, and quality. It is clear I have jumped with both feet in to the RED. Why, because it is the first format that achieves a balance. This production balance, has tipped the scales of an even more important dynamic. The balance between Independent and the Studio. I have said it before and I will say it here. RED production is 60% the cost of film production with no sacrifice in quality, and it is the same cost of HD production with greater quality... It is a no brainer.

What would you want to gain from such a thread?

As a GOBSSP producer who uses Red, you know the benefits. But there are other producers (from other guilds) that once educated about Red, workflow, costs, etc., will use it and therefore create more jobs for Redusers (although I'm personally not looking for that myself; it will benefit others out there). But it's difficult to go through all these threads. I thought a single thread might become an easier resource and help those that may be not be technically oriented, etc. Just a thought I got after reading a post in the cinematography sub-forum from a producer needing more info but is getting "lost" in the RedUser forum.

Well if anyone needs ammo when talking to a producer, PM me and if I can help you I will.

Jason, I'm with you.

This sub-forum is a great idea for the simple reason of consolidating production info. I'm not a micro-manager with crew and vendors. I hire people for what they are, professionals. My issue with RED is that it's so new that unless you have an overall understanding of what's needed both crew and gear-wise you'll never convince (in my case) advertising agency producers into accepting this technology. They don't want the technology to get in the way and I'm sure none of us do.

From a commercial standpoint the choice between film and RED will never be about the money. As I stated in a previous post, we chose RED due to the fact that we were shooting real people in interview situations. We shot it all in 4K with the intention of blowing up the field of view to give us a close up on top of the wide shot we already had. That was huge for us.

If we could discuss the best setups for our DIT's and DMT's, the continued need for a 2nd AC and possible loader, I think it would clear the air for the people throwing the party (Producers, Prod. Managers,...) It's about hiding the technique and shepherding the artists so they can make the best work.

Game on.
