Hi all,

I've been trying to get a GTX285 from MacVidCards working on our 8-core Mac Pro 4,1. I've installed it in slot 1, with a GT120 in slot 2. The OS recognizes the card but if I open Premiere or Resolve I get a kernel panic. If I replace the GTX285 with a second GT120, they run fine. I've tried updating the graphics card and CUDA drivers to no effect. Running OS X 10.6.8. Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have advice on how to debug this? I'm trying to figure out if it's a software issue, or if I have to return the card. MacVidCards has not responded to my repeated messages, which is strange since they have such good ratings. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hey Sam,
Have you deleted the applegraphicspowermanagement.kext from the system? This will cause a bunch of problems because it is controlling your card to keep it's power consumption down. You must delete that before the card will work properly.

Dave's customer service is great. This is the jewish holiday so he may not be answering any emails.

Thanks for letting me know about the AGPM.kext, I had not been aware of this issue. However deleting it does not seem to have fixed the problem.

Do you have direct contact info for Dave? I have sent MacVidCards several eBay messages over the last couple weeks and not gotten a response.

dpart2@mac.com

The instructions about the AGPM.kext are usually in the installation instructions that come with the card (Usually). I've bought 3 cards from him and haven't had an issue.

Have you downloaded and run Cuda-Z to see if your card is being properly utilized? This will give an indication if it is an issue with the card or your system itself. If the card is working properly there is most likely an issue with the hardware/software on your system. There is also the possibility that the card is failing. Dave does test and benchmark the cards before he send them out. If that is the issue he will get you a replacement. Best of luck

Also check that this is deleted as well: Dave sent me these instructions as well when I had the 285.
Just make sure ATY_Init is gone from Extensions folder (you have to look, Extensions folder does not show up in stand=ard search)

I did not find an ATY_Init in the Extensions folder. I got in touch with Dave and he also told me to run CUDA-Z, which also caused a kernel panic when the 285 is in. Waiting to hear back on what to do.

Most likely a dying card. He will swap it out guaranteed unless it's your system that caused the card to fail which likely isn't the case.
