I apologize, as I'm sure this topic has been discussed numerous times in the past. I don't visit this section of the forum very often.

I recently downloaded and installed the Red Final Cut Studio 2 installation support package (v1.0.0) , along with the Red Quicktime Codec (v3.8.0). However, I still cannot open R3D files either in Final Cut Pro or Quicktime Player. Final Cut Pro does not recognize the R3D file and Quicktime claims the R3D files are not movie files.

Here are the versions of all the software programs I am using. I downloaded all the software updates from www.apple.com.

Final Cut Pro v.6.0.5
Quicktime Player v.7.6.0
Color v.1.0.4
Soundtrack Pro v.2.0.2
Motion v.3.0.2
DVD Studio Pro v.4.2.1
Compressor v.3.0.5
LiveType v.2.1.3
Apple Qmaster
Cinema Tools v.4.0.1

Maybe I did not install the Red support software properly, or I installed them in the wrong place? I'm very very new to Mac OS X. In fact, I just bought my new Mac Pro and have been using it for less than 5 days and still very unfamiliar with it so far. I've mainly used PC Windows.

Anyway, if anyone has any experience or advice on how to fix this, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance.

This is the correct behaviour.

What you can do is point the Log & Transfer window of FCP (cmd-shift-8) to a folder containing R3Ds in the same format as the shooting drive. FCP can then ingest directly to either MOV-wrapped R3D ("Native") or to Prores.
