Hello all. At work I'm trying to use the Log & Transfer plugin to import R3D files into FCP, cut a spot and then send to Color. I can import the R3D files, and cut a spot, but when I send to Color, nothing appears in the timeline of Color. The FCP timeline is a simple one with no effects, transitions etc. It's just to test the workflow before the real job next week.

The Mac Pro that I'm using is a 8 core 3.0 with 5 Gb of RAM and an ATI X1900 graphics card. Quicktime has been updated to 7.4.5 along with the ProApps update. The machine is running OS 10.4.11.

As an aside, I have a Mac Pro at home and this workflow works for me on my machine. The only difference is that I have an nVidia card and I am running Leopard.

If anyone has any ideas on how I can get Color to show the timeline from FCP, please let me know. Maybe upgrade to Leopard or reinstall the FCP suite?

Thanks,
TM

did you look in the message window in color if you get any problems reported ? (setup tab)
Instead of "Send to Color" try to export an XML from FCP and open the XML in Color.

If that doesn´t work either, my guess is the combination of QT 7.4.5 and Tiger isn´t a good one. Have no problems here with Leopard and QT 7.4.5

i saw this behavior once too... what I did was duplicate the sequence involved and place it in a brand new project file... viola. Hope this works for you..

Jerry is right. I do the same thing -depending on the project-. A lot of times FCP gets the sequence corrupted. You don't really notice until a problem happens. And usually, the solution is to bring your timeline into a new fresh project.

It also happens when using the media manager. Every time I conform an offline for an online (whether traditional or digital) I start on a fresh project to avoid media manager sucky way of reading the usable media in the timeline.

Thanks for all the good info. I'll try those things and report back.

Thanks again.

There are no messages in the messages window in Color when I send from FCP. I exported both an xml and an edl and in both cases, no images appear in Color. The only thing I haven't tried is to upgrade the Mac Pro to Leopard.

Are there any further workflow downsides to upgrading to Leopard on a Mac Pro with a Blackmagic card that I should look for?

TM

Installed Leopard, but still no go. Might try to reinstall Color.

i'm going to test the same thing when I get home, I want further reasons NOT to use this feature of FCP, as its screwed up two VERY good workflows,

tunemonkey,
I ask a very stupid question (as I have not used the L&T function), but the media you are editing is ProRes and not the proxies, correct? The proxies are fine in FCP but Color refuses them.

Also, I recommend stripping-out any non-video clips and even audio. We went through a lot of this in the FInal Touch days.

The suggestion to create a copy of the sequence and strip out the audio before sending to Color worked for me. Thanks!!

BTW -- I was able to send my ProRes 422 (HQ) versions of the RED files to Color just fine... it didn't refuse them. I'm running Tiger OS 10.4.11 / FCP 6.0.3 / QT 7.4.5 / MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.16 / 3 GB RAM.
