Hi, may I ask, is it possible for me to transfer the data from RedDrive without unmount it from the camera?

Means I want to connect the fire wire cable from RedDrive to my laptop to do data transfering without unplug the RedDrive's cable.

Is it possible to do that?

Thanks for the suggestion and answer.

well.. doubt it.

Well, doubt it. Just from electronic point of view - that is a SATA interface, USB or firewire. All these interfaces are point to point and for a star hierarchy. I can't imagine how sophisticated electronics would be needed to do what You ask for.. something like this is perhaps available on very very expensive fibre channel routers, SAN, but with what we have here, hardly.. but someone may correct me, of course.

Thanks you Stepan for answering my question.

Question again, actually I am facing a problem with taking a long time period to transfer the data after wrap. So I was imagined that if I can transfer the data to my laptop from RedDrive while shooting and without unmount it, is that any better idea to help me out?

Buy a second drive and rotate them? Like everyone else? ;)

Cards are bliss...

And safe, too...

Disks will die one day.
RAID 0 disks will die one earlier day.
CF cards are pretty safe. And you don't get long backlogs and your DIT can check the files as you shoot.

Short CF cards are really... lovely...

Of course it would be possible to develop drive electronics to handle parallel access - but frankly, you wouldn't want to do that. Even if handled properly, it's too much of a risk to loose your work or impose performance issues. A drive can only serve one host at maximum speed. Of course you could make up a safer scheme based on the RAID nature of the RED-Drive, but the RAID scheme is used for safety, not advanced access methods, so you better not mess around with that.

Switching drives/cards as everyone else does is quicker and safer. DSMCs with dual CF modules have overlapping record function.
And being practical, you can not unmount a drive without stopping to shoot, and without unmount, no transfer. What REALLY happens if you connect two hosts to a RED drive at the same time - I don't know. Maybe it crashes and you will loose data. Maybe the drive electronics will simply give the camera interface priority and the PC just won't see it (that's how I would handle it).

I guess that's understandable. I always pick CF card as the main shooting medium if i dont have any reason to go for RED Drive. It's so much more convenient. But if you have to use RED drive, FW800 (Drive) and Esata (HDD) should help you to backup the data faster. USB is the slowest.

I haven't seen any documentation on the RED drives on REDs site. Do they deliver these with printed information? The R1 user manual does have some information how to connect them to the cam, but not much.
