  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - VERSION 2 - WHO WANTS ONE !!!!

+2. Money burning a whole in my pocket just thinking about it!!

C'mon RED!! Step up and fill the need!

Alex

I would take one.

Maybe NAB will move the Toia Module from concept to reality...

Would be nice... but I think Red have set the stall with Meizer vs Pro I/O vs +1

But the TM would be great.

1 for me please.
hope Red will hear at NAB'13

I would buy 5 of these on opening day. This is a NEED for every Epic and Scarlet.

Why is everyone still calling for proxy recording? I effortlessly edit R3ds in Premiere without transcoding, and as far as I know Avid can do the same. Is it really just for people still stuck on FCP 7, or is there another reason?

Not everyone edits their own stuff.

Also full size XLRs.

Am I the only one who rechecks this thread every time it gets bumped, hoping that RED (Jim, Jarred, anyone) has chimed in?

Your correct.... but... as soon as you have a small grade or small effect to render... BOOM! RENDER!!!!!!!!!!! And slow as hell !
And if you load up to many files in the time line... You start getting a clunky time line scrub and playback... Unless you have a mega machine under your desk.
Laptops it can playback as well... but not to long before the fan in your computer starts howling like a bastard looking for cold air as the CPU is cooking itself to death, then the CPU goes into half speed to save itself from frying itself and you have a hardly any playback at all...

Now unless you build yourself a maxed out TOWER with every video card you can get your hands on... thats currently the only way to Edit / Grade / VFX R3D's with little fuss... People like myself that travel the world shooting , editing etc... Thats not an option.

We are about 3 to 4 computer generations away from RED RAW heaven.. Where RED ROCKET will become just a "REMEMBER WHEN" conversation over a few beers.
Till then... Sell me 3 of these things... And I will happily wait until a computer manufacturer brings out a laptop that eats R3D's for breakfast. Like I currently get with PRO RES.

I am amazed how basic most of my clients and editors edit suites are. Older Mac towers or PC s with minimal upgrades and these systems work just fine cutting Pro Res or XDcam type formatts. Why would clients spend more money than they need? They dont like hearing that they need to modernise their systems just to play R3D files.
Apple not developing their Mac Tower is also contributing to a slow down in Edit suite upgrading as people try and work out what to do next.

The time for this module is past. The competition has moved. RED EPIC now needs to come standard with this functionality built in. Even if RED has built it as a module, best to scrap it and consider an integrated way to deliver this.

If you took the thousands of dollars that this module would probably cost and put them in to a PC, you'd have a machine that's plenty capable of handling R3Ds. I work on a $3k desktop, and it can play back 1/2 res debayer through Premiere thanks to GPU acceleration! I do all my editing at 1/4 res, and to render a 10 minute piece out of DaVinci at full quality takes about an hour. The performance of a $3k laptop isn't that much different.

I assume you're exaggerating a bit in regards to your laptop, otherwise you might want to get your hardware checked out. :P

I can still certainly see how other people on less modern workflows would see the benefits of having proxies, though. For me, I'd rather have a decent XLR solution for under $1k. Maybe I should start a thread to help people modernize their hardware and workflows...

You can come and try modenise my laptop that I drag around the world.. Not sure how far your going to get, its already a MAXED out 3 month old Retina mac book pro...
Like I siad, Im not going to be dragging around a PC tower video carded up to the max...just to get fast render speeds and full res playback... Im trying to stay portable. HD Pro res (redlogfilm) is more than enough for my quick turnarounds.. And waiting an hour to render 10 minutes.. My God... Haven't you heard the phrase. Time is money.

Pro res will do me just fine until the computer world brings me a fire breathing laptop that eats R3D's for Render breakfast. not just 1/4 res playback.

And we all know that wont be anytime soon... Hence this Prores / DNXHD module will save the day till that wonderful day comes.

And knowing that Blackmagic knock one out for $395 bucks that does everything...
Makes me wonder why RED does not want to charge us 3X say $1200 bucks for a integrated Red version. They would quite literally sell thousands for all of us tight deadline guys, that dont want to be bogged down with Rendering.

Mark perfect.

Epic small, fast, a monster of technology with this add-on module and Dragon (with a fan that blows less) we would surely all be happy.
I was on the decision to take the form Meizler, not 'a matter of money, but I wait until Red face this module "Toia".
Epic and 'small and should remain small for what I use.
Team Red and everyone knows that this module will sell a lot, so why not do it? Maybe they want us to stay on Raw, but as the saying MArk, or you have a powerful tower in the office, or with a laptop and 'hell, you always need a Redrocket . We will now see the fight becomes more 'tight, Alexa have the module for both Raw DNxHD to ProRes ... incorporated making it even more flexible ... but not in space and not in resolution and dynamic range soon with Dragon.
I hope this time to NAb 2013. For now I still hard on my Epic in a European market that dotes on Alexa.

NAB is getting quite annoying for me... especially at the RED tent.. I see this really cool stuff in the windows, and some really cool gear actually being demoed right in front of us... 12 months later... Nothing. ? Im like wanting to throw money at RED in so many ways, I quite literally havent spent a cent with them this year, because the gear you see at Nab doesn't really hit the streets for some time... and alot of times it just disappears.
Not sure why R&D can't get there stuff past manufacturing... Even shoulder pad's , lenses, HDTV transmitters etc... all sorts of stuff. Just seems to be stuck in prototype land and never leaves..

Anyways... Im sure there is a reason.. and Im sure Jim is frustrated with the pace. Because I am.

Its hard to get on top but harder to stay there...
its really time for a technical oscar to red!!!
