  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm about to get my pro I/o and can't rig my VF APU to it because red owns the patents on the adapter plate.

RED can you tell me you have something coming out or not ASAP so I can adjust my package.

Thank you very much.

Hardly sounds like something RED needs to adjust. Talk to the fine guys at Viewfactor and ask them if they might have a solution available or coming.

I read somewhere here on the forum that ViewFactor is designing a plate for the Pro i/o. Not sure about patents on the adapter bracket/plate they are building?

The wedge on the back of the Pro I/O should be the same as on all the other modules. Is that not the case? If it's the same the gear you have should fit just fine.

The wedge is the same, but I don't think there are screw holes that match the pattern of the back of the Epic (correct me if I'm wrong). Some battery plates, like the WC plate, can snap on to the protruding V, but the weight of the battery creates a stress that the V wasn't designed for. Someone would have to leverage the additional slot added by the module adapter and modules themselves to support the weight without screws, and with Red in litigation mode, I suspect accessory makers might be reluctant to do this. Hopefully either Red themselves, or a Red-condoned accessory maker, will come out with a new plate.

I've posted about this elsewhere. . .

I know that VF talked about making one in the past, but havn't heard anything firm about it yet. Seems like it will soon be a hot item. If Brook or anyone from VF reads this, please let us know.

VF has a solution coming

I found this. Is this what you mean or want?

Hilarious I just pasted the link.
YES.

The issue is this:

The holes on the body that the APU screw go into are being used by the Module adater which has recessed torx screws so thats why I need this here adapter.

In my case it will go on the Pro IO which is on the module adapter,

IF

The PRO IO has open holes on it like the body and I can attach straight to it.

From what Ive heard VF is not making this adapter.

RED will not let them due to patents and lawyers and stuff I guess which I can understand... but at the time I got my camera there weren't any other battery options out there. The RED Backpack accessories wasn't available and If you ask me a bit pricey and over complicated which caused me and most to run to VF and WC.

I'd like to not have to put my VF APU on an AB matrix plate but I will if it comes to that.

Does anyone know if the WC system works on the Pro IO?

Theoretically all the RED v-locks should be the same. My WC plate fits the camera and the back of the Quad battery module.
On closer inspection it looks like there is a flaw with my adapter module which is exceeding the tolerances of the WC plate which is why it's not fitting...

I have the RED Backpack with quickplate and it also only mounts directly to the camera. There seems to be no current solution to mount it with any module attached.

RED, are you listening? :sifone:

All the previous posts are correct - the Pro IO module does not have any way of mounting either our plate or the Red Backpack. We have a solution right now but the current climate for accessories on this camera is making new products less than forthcoming for a number of reasons. Stay tuned.

Are you guys saying that the Wooden Quickback won't fit either? Why doesn't it fit? Any photos of the back?

My Wooden Camera back fits the back of my ProIO no problem. You can't secure it with screws, but I never used them anyway. If I use it (which isn't often) I only put Dinoic 90s or HCs on it and it seems plenty secure. I can see why folks may be hesitant with the very heavy RED bricks however. I have sometimes jury rigged a safety "catch" off the RED top plate which keeps the battery plate from ever being dislodged up and off.
BTW, the dual battery module works great on the back of the IO and is no larger and much, much lighter than putting a brick on the back. I know people want to reuse what they have, but I've never been so happy to have loaded up on REDvolts.

Good to know. Vf has a solution so thats cool. Whats your strategy for P tap accessories, with the dual mod.

Love my RED cameras...but this is just starting to suck majorly. This seems like yet another design flaw that I'll have to have yet another piece to make it all work. I understand RED's whole scope on keeping their designs protected but if they can't provide solutions...and no 6-12 months later is not a solution...they need to let others help out. Their own plate can't fit their own io module! You can't fit an io module without another module in between. By the time it's built it'll be two feet long!

There is an accessory power out on the IO module. Same connector as the RED 1. I never used that one much because of all the reports of problems with the amperage draw of remote FFs. But I'll get some new cables made up and give this one a whirl.
I still wish someone would make a single redvolt plate with a D-tap, for very lightweight set-ups. Innocinema was showing a proto two REDvolt plate at NAB, but a smaller one that could run an accessory or two only while the handle REDvolt powered the camera would be ideal. But I digress....
