What is the difference between the Pro I/O Module vs Base I/O Module for the Epic? I cant find any technical details on these modules or any of the others. Does this info. presently exist and if so where the hell is it? Thankyou

Well, this isn't going to be everything, but here is a post from Jarred that might help you a bit:

The biggest difference is Audio.. The Pro I/O has Digital Audio inputs, Plus it has full size XLR Audio Outputs ( no audio output on the base I/O ), and an additional AUX power output.

I'd be interested in knowing this, too. RED has done a fabulous deal for Stage 2, but the way I see it, 95% of people are going to want the Pro I/O module. So, why put the base module in that package? Honestly, I would rather pay an additional upgrade fee to bypass getting the base module and instead get the pro module. I wonder if RED is considering this?

All of this is said with very limited information on the differences between the two. Maybe someone from RED can clarify a bit. I would just hate the total waste that will be caused if they send out 3,000 base modules as part of that package that don't get used.

I agree, I have a couple of things that never get use from my base R1 pkg that just sit and collect dust. (that base plate that was never to be used as a base plate)

So Red folks, how about just saving us all the time and you all the dumb questions of "can I trade my base mod for the pro mod and pay the diff"

Here is what I have gathered so far. All is subject to change...

Pro I/O Module $2950
The PRO I/O module will support up to 4 channels of AES-EBU digital audio and will be compatible with mixers like the Sound Devices 552.

The maximum number of recorded audio channels is 4, so enabling two or four AES-EBU inputs disables the corresponding analog audio input(s).

The Base I/O Module does not include the AES-EBU digital audio inputs. There is a Word Clock out pin in the same connector that ingests the AES/EBU digital audio.

Single and dual link HD-SDI with Full size BNC.
Full size XLR Audio Outputs
Full size XLR Audio Inputs
Two Aux power/GPIO ports.
Lens/RS232
Timecode input/output.

Base I/O Module $1750
Single and dual link HD-SDI with Full size BNC.
Mini-XLR Audio Inputs
One Aux power/GPIO
Lens/RS232
Timecode input/output.

No audio output on the Base I/O module.

Pro I/O

Pro I/O

That would seem to be a sensible option.

I prefer that too!!

i vote for upgrade option.

i never used the baseplate too. i only use the arris style baseplate.
but i think that a lot of people will be happy to just get the base I/O, remember, the modules are for scarlet and epic and not everybody is doing high end stuff.

Audio Out

Audio Out

Does no "Audio out" mean no headphone monitoring of audio while recording or no XLR output?

"can I trade my base mod for the pro mod and pay the diff"

It's called sell it to someone else and use that money to upgrade :)

I don't think folks should get spoiled by the fact that RED is allowing full trade-in on RED One's towards EPIC X.. They are taking care of their early customers and making sure they are brought under the umbrella of "obsolescence obsolete" that they originally stated back in the days of the RED One.

But, if they start allowing everyone to trade in modules and brains and such to upgrade to the latest version(s), they'll likely go broke, and there won't be a company for us to buy stuff from :)

Jason

One AES input will not be sufficient. The SD 788T, one of the standards for double-system recording these days, outputs only two channels of digital audio per AES cable. Thus, to get four channels into the camera, it would take two AES inputs.

The PRO I/O does provide two AES/EBU inputs... plus Word Clock out.

Yes. . . I'm not interested in the standard I/O module, either. The inability to output a digital audio signal to the RED One is a significant shortcoming I'm glad to see being addressed with the Epic.

And I'm glad to see that it will have to AES3 inputs. I'm just sorry we're limited to a total of four tracks. It would have been great to send it eight.

Could we get an answer on paying extra and getting a Pro I/O in the stage 1 and 2 packages. I'm not interested in the base I/O.... and could I get a side order of wheat toast ?

I believe Red will make this option available to those interested. Many will opt for the upgrade.

From "Five Easy Pieces" for your enjoyement...

Love that scene
