Any thoughts on how Red is going to make accessory costs appropriate for both low end Scarlets ($7K) as well as high end Epics ($33-53K)?

Dave

I think this is were we are going to see standard accessories and then "pro" accessories.

I absolutely cannot see accs for the Scarlet not working on Epic systems, and vice-versa.

That said, there could certainly be more or less fully-featured accs designed for different markets - however, I imagine the majority of pricing difference as regards accs will be down to which units you want and need for a given price range. For instance, a casual Scarlet user will probably not need or want HD-SDI outputs - this is also where an "AUDIO I/O" acc might be sold, in addition to the full DSMC I/O unit.

Just a quick thought...

Alright, did I miss something? I don't understand why anyone would want anything other than HDSDI outputs? Not one pro piece of gear I have has anything other than HDSDI. It's the industry standard. The reason it's the industry standard is because it's the best way to get an HD signal from point a to point b.

What else would you use?

Nick

Nothing, that's my point!

By "casual scarlet user", I mean non-professional/starting out filmmakers. Which they'll sell a bunch of the fixed lens Scarlets to, at least...

Don't forget, there'll be a lot of people buying these who can't afford to rent in (much less buy) HD-SDI monitors for a shoot. At least, that's my guess.

Cheers,
Dom.

I see your point there. What's the cheapest Scarlet cost? I think the cheapest HD-SDI monitor is around $2k currently. HVX users managed to buy those 17" panny monitors for $3k when they came out though.

It would be certainly nice to have HD-SDI if RED could include it for the low end price. I'm guessing HD-SDI implementation might be pricey due to licensing or proprietary parts.

EDIT:

Sorry, just re-read you post and I was answering a totally different one!!

Ignore me, my brain's turned to mush...

Cheers,
Dom.

Oh, PS: Yes, I'm sure there'll be some that can afford HD-SDI monitors with the cheaper rig - there'll probably be a bunch of people who already have them, as well... I would have thought there'll still be a size-able section of buyers at the low-end who don't need one and/or can't afford it.

Still, with the new modular system, at least they can add it later!

I’m interested in components of a basic Scarlet or Epic.
Is this a brain, lens mount and what?...handle or remote?

Does the R1 evf/lcd plug directly into the brain?
What are the new large capacity recording solutions?

D

My guess is this. There will be a module, and it will work for all the brains. There will not be a "pro" vs "standard" version.. That would be a pain for RED's stock.

Remember this modular idea not only serves the customers, but it serves RED well as a business model. It's helpful to have a product that can be sold with a number of cameras. Increases the chance that stock will continue to move at a good pace.

As for pricing. I expect general modules to be pretty reasonable. $500 on the low side, and $1,500.00 on the high side.

WARNING WARNING WARNING: THIS IS A GUESS..I HAVE NO REAL INFORMATION HERE.

The more expensive modules will be specific use feature film type things, and the less expensive modules will be general use "everybody's gonna want one" type of things.

That's my guess.
