  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good news re Sonnet hard drives. (Maybe old news, but in the middle of Alaska for the last few weeks getting very beautiful images from my Red.)

The 1 TB drives were $950 when I bought 4 weeks ago...
Have used the 640 GB and now the 1 TB units for quite some time. They are small and totally reliable.
The new faster Express card adaptor wil improve transfer speeds up to 40%.
I have not used this new card yet though.
I have no connection with Sonnet. Just really appreciate their products.
Makes my life a lot easier.
 
I have been considering a Fusion, but if you have it as a mirrored RAID and one drive fails how do you get the data out of the other one?
 
Don't do mirrored. We do 2 backups on two seperate drives for security sake, which is stored and carried separately onto aeroplanes etc, so select striped raid set when you configure your raid in Disk Utility on Mac.

We LOVE the Fusions and use them all the time. We write two separate copies (no Raid 1). There are two separate eSata ports on the unit. We mount them as individual drives.

Hello Mark,

Some time ago I've read one of your posting recommending the Wiebettech enclosers. I bought two and I love them. But I have a problem and would like to know if you guys are experiencing the same.

I bought a Tempo Sata Expresscard/34 so I could use ESATA speed.

Ive tried the Expresscard in two different computers, Tiger and Lepard, and in both it would crash my computer, like that window with a bunch of text in Japanese /english, that I had to force to shut down the macs.

Finally I stop using it, because the last time if basically fu$%^ed my hardrive and lost a lot of stuff. Thankfully I had a back up so I format it and recover all the footage.

So my question is. Is there any safe way to use ESATA with a Macbook Pro , leopard and the wiebetech enclosers? I'd love to be able to use that speed, but after that experience I am really afraid of using the Sata port.

Here is the drill:
When you set up your transfer first connect your external drive and ESATA Express 34 card with the two cables. Then plug the ESATA card into your Mac. Then insert the power cable from your firewire port. No crashes.
When you are finished first click on the ESATA card symbol on your top info bar and select Power off Card. Then unmount your drives and then remove the card from your computer. No crashes.

Not sure why your computer crashes but I had a similar problem which I solved with the help of a friend. Click on the about this Mac in the drop down menu of the Apple symbol top left. Click the more info tab then scroll down to the PCI cards and see if you have any installed if not this means you need to install the correct driver by copying it from the supplied driver disk to the correct directory. It is not a simple self install unfortunately. I can’t remember where we ended up copying it to but we copied the driver that came with the express to sata card into the correct directory on my laptop and it worked. Sorry for not being more helpful. Hopefully someone else can tell you exactly where to copy it to.

I use a Soho raid with a sata connection to a sata to express 34 adapter. The raid has hot swappable esata drives set to 3gb it is sturdy, reliable and extremely fast. I set it to a raid1 and really like it I even have time machine set to it and can work of the raid during a time machine back up. But it does need power and it is fan cooled so the Fusion seams to be a quieter and more power efficient solution if that is a problem.
 
What is the reason people are avoiding RAID 1 (mirror) with the Sonnet Fusion F2 drives? I thought the whole point of them was to RAID them. I just pluged in one of the two drives on mine (mirror) and all the data was available as I expected.

It is common practise to do two backups off the exposed Red drive onto two seperate drives for security sake. If one of the back up drives is lost your career is not... Production insurance company's in the UK also insist on this practise.
The reason I prefer the F2's is size, quality and no fans. I can carry ten drives in a small Storm case.
 
So basically you make one copy to a F2 and then to another one?

I think we are on slightly crossed terms here. You are striping F2s. Some people are using no RAID and making two individual copies to the disks in the F2.

I copy twice. Once to one F2 mirror, and once to another F2 mirror. So I have 4 drives with same data. So if I lost one and one drive broke in the other, I would still be okay.

What I don't get is why people copy to the individual disks in an F2, rather than just copy once to it mirrored as this gives you the same thing.

But if you are striping your F2 drives, then surely you need two F2 units to have two copies, don't you?
 
Ah yes, you get more space.

How is RED being received in the UK? Not worked there for a while.
 
Starting to really take of. Typical British conservative sceptimism innitialy but the image quality and more mature workflow options are winning many sceptics over. I am very impressed with the images we are getting here in Alaska. Working in - 20 C with no problems apart from viewfinder color banding. Definately temperature related. Using the LCD for all the outside work.

Fusion 2 with new macbook pro; firewire port shortage

Has anyone solved the firewire port shortage problem when pairing a new macbook pro and a sonnet fusion f2? Now that we have one less firewire port on the new macbook pro. How can I power the fusion drive and still dump from my firewire 800 cf reader?

Can you power fusion 2 from USB?

Or do I have to go back to a USB 2 CF reader?

Any thoughts?
