Hi there,

My editor recently switched to Adobe to edit our most recent project and is not enjoying the workflow as much as he enjoyed editing in FCP. He has done quite a bit of the work already in premiere but would be delighted if there was an easy way to take the work we have done into FCP to continue editing. I noticed that Premiere has an export FCP XML function. We have tried this but edited R3D in Premiere and would have to edit prores in FCP.

So my questions are:

1.) Will I be able to go into FCP using export FCP XML

2.) If I transcode all the footage, could I simply online everything to the new prores files? (We tried a test to see if this would work and FCP had us relinking every time the clip was used ie. raw footage, the Sound Sync Clips, and again with clips in the timeline)

3.) Lastly, if not possible. I have heard Premiere is very customizable. Is there a way to make the editing look and feel like FCP?

Thanks

Anyone?

Also, would it be possible to transcode the footage to prores using red cine, relink the .R3D within premiere CC to the prores, then send out the Final Cut Pro XML that will produce a Prores timeline?

Thanks

Hi Fidel

You can jump between FCP 7 & Cs6 easily . As this was a big selling point when the FCPX debacle happened. Also some where in CS6 is a command where the UI mirrors FCP 7 in terms of keyboard short cuts etc. IMO this is most probably going to be the easiest path as you may have to transcode the R3D's to get things to play in FCP 7. I don't know because I don't edit R3D's within FCP7.

Just as a safety precaution with CS6, remember to set automated saving say every 10 mins and then at the end of every session save a dated a copy to another HD of the project in case of file corruptions etc.

Hi Fidel,

I haven't had to do this personally so I'm just brainstorming some ideas for you. First thing though, your editor can change the keyboard shortcut settings over pretty easily to FCP7 style. Just go Premiere Pro > Keyboard Shortcuts. Then you should be able to change the keyboard layout Preset to Final Cut Pro 7.0. The look of Premiere is completely customizable too, just drag the panels around and dock/snap them into any formation you like. He can also adjust the UI brightness if that would make him feel more at home. It's in Preferences > Appearance.

If he still wants to move it over to FCP7. Here's what I would try:

1. Save a new Copy of your Premiere project, so that if what I tell you stuffs all the media linking up, you have somewhere to go back to!
2. I'm assuming you are in Premiere Pro Creative Cloud, if not, this process won't work as the media linking isn't quite as well thought out in previous editions.
3. Select all of the footage you would like to replace with your ProRes transcodes (ensure the naming of the transcodes is all the same)
4. Right click/Ctrl Click on one of the pieces of footage and select "Make Offline". This should make all of your selected footage go Offline. (In the dialogue box that pops up select "Media Files Remain on Disk")
5. Have all the same footage elements selected again, and Right Click/Ctrl Click once more and select "Link Media"
6. In the dialogue box that pops up under Match File Properties, uncheck the "File Extension" checkbox (as your ProRes files will be .mov's and not R3D's)
7. Now select locate and point to the first ProRes Transcode it asks for.
8. If all your other ProRes files are in that same folder, it should go ahead and locate all of them for you.

The only unknown is how you will go handling R3D's that are split into multiple files. Would be interested to hear what happens with them.

Anyway, just an idea there. I'm not familiar with doing this kind of thing on a regular basis as Premiere Pro is my home so I just work with R3D material. Hopefully it gives you something to think about and some way forward :)

thanks for the detailed response. This is what I was thinking I would be able to do too but upon trying to do so I ran into some problems that makes me think I might have to start over. If you have any other solutions please let me know.

The problem I ran into was when I tried to relink to the prores, I could not get the files match up due to the files being dragged right off the harddrive without going through an importer.

This resulted in editing an R3D with a filename such as: A001_C001_0612R6_001.R3D as it appears right off the card with the extra extension at the end of 001, 002, 003, etc, instead of a transcoded file that has the filename: A001_C001_0612R6.

Anyway to keep my edit, relink, and send to final cut? or did we mistakenly skip a vital step and would be better off starting over?

any info helps.

thanks.

Because XML is a text file, you may want to try opening it in a text editor before bringing it into FCP. You can do a search for "_001.R3D" replacing it with ".mov". Search and replace on XML is a very simple and powerful tool.
