so I guess a FCP project can be exported as an XML files that premiere will then be able to open and work with.... then some editing gets done....

then what is exported from Premiere that FCP can read?

is this a AAF file? or what?

also is there a way for ProRes to play on a PC? inside CS4?

Hi Mike,

I thoroughly tested the FCP - PP CS 4 workflow.

Exporting a FCP XML to PP CS4 works as expected. BUT you have to clean up the FCP timeline from slug, audio dissolves and whatnot to create a stable PP CS4 timeline. Otherwise PP CS4 will crash endlessly.

Back to FCP is only possible via EDL. PP CS4 can read ProRes but doesn't write to it. You have to install the ProRes QT plugin provided by Apple.

PP CS4 is pretty buggy, IMO: http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=389957&postcount=15

I'm not familiar with PP, but I've had to export EDLs from other systems to FCP in the past and the safest way has been to export a single track of video at a time. Granted I haven't done this in a long time, its worth a try...

never simple... I'm just trying to find something workable...

I have a bunch of people editing on FCP. I'm on a PC with CS4

so the editing work I do, I want to share with them.

Be careful, we were slated to go between FCS and PP CS4 for a feature, we had to go all FCP (Im primarily an Adobe user and love CS4 btw). I seemed to get a generic error that no one else has gotten in the world apparently...Adobe tech support never heard of it. Mind you this was before the very latest update so this might not be an issue anymore..it only seemed to affect me out of every Adobe user in the world apparently but still...
I would stay on one platform or the other if it can be helped. If not, just import an FCP xml in Premiere.

not really. they are all on Macs with FCP.

I can always export a cut, but I would like to edit something export some kind of EDL that can be read in FCP

Mike im not sure if this helps but check it out.

Premiere works with editing the R3D directly no transcoding or ProRes or anything needed ecxept CS4 and the update and IT WORKS BEAUTIFULLY.
If you want to go that route or it that helps let me know be happy to tell you my experience.
And im a FCP guy too but Adobe has got this figured out beautifully.
so sweet.

Hey Luis. indeed I'm a Premiere guy. all RED stuff worls as it should....

I'm trying to find a way where normal timeline stuff with other footage from other cameras.... normal editing FCP stuff.....

I want to have a timeline full of clips I edit in Premiere and export a EDL.... then I want someone running FCP to open that and see the changes I made.

Mike

Oh my bad you want crazy stuff to work.
Cool.

not really. they are all on Macs with FCP.

PP CS4 is available for OS X at a very reasonable price; and if there's lots of them, group discount!

Because honestly, if this isn't a freebie show, you're going to save time by getting them on the same platform as opposed to them wasting lots of time rebuilding EDL transfers.

Alternately, can you borrow a MacBook and cut on FCP for this show?

well. this is the huge Burning Man documentary we shot. crew of 25 people... I have 8-12 people editing right now.

I wonder what would happen if we got a mac version of CS4....

if that could open a .prproj file..... ?
