  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere, Red Rocket, and External Monitor

Good to know!
Did you benefit from Rocket with Matrox preset?
I presume you use the second gpu port for the HDMI output with Redrocket and Mercury hardware engine or output both HDMI and HDSDI from the MXO? What is your graphic board?

Jean,
The rocket card at this time only does debayer of R3d in timeline at this time.....so yes, i do get benefits of the Rocket card during playback with ANY setup in PPro using any setup including Matrox presets.

YOu do NOT however (no program-not FCP/PPro or any) get to use the outputs from the Rocket card. When using Matrox Presets, PPro sends a signal for output to my Matrox Graphics card and then outputs that to the Matrox Device (external box) and from the Matrox MXO2 LE i can then send my signal via HDMI (10bit) to my 50" monitor and at same time i can send over SDI (from Matrox box) to my color correct monitor.

My computers graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4870---therefore i am not using the Nvidia and benefits of the extra added CUDA acceleration. BUT, i don't need it for playback in the timeline...everything runs very stable at the moment.

NOW, when it comes to doing TRANSCODING from PPro - AME, then the ROCKET CARD seems to play NO PART in that---this is a let down of course since that is one of the MAIN benefits of having the card. I am not sure if Adobe plans to implement the Rocket Card into the transcode process since that of course is it's major benefit--but i really HOPE so......I'd love to hear someone from Adobe chime in here....In the meantime I'll be looking for a Nvidia card for extra processing power ---mostly for the transcoding end of things. I've had recommendations from GTX 590 to the Quadro 4000. The one item i would like to have is 10 bit out....best by SDI, but i know that's not possible or affordable. but hopefully HDMI or Display....

Anyone have recommendations for best bang for the buck?

Very interesting!
Since it is not possible to output a 10 bit monitoring signal in Premiere thru Nvidia Quadro with an Apple computer(HDMI,Displayport or HDSDI),you can benefit of Mercury engine whith a Geforce GTX 285 for Mac with 8 bit DVI output (it's the only affordable Apple/Adobe approved solution );but only on the after market,Nvidia stopped their production.

Jean,
i'm not so sure about what you say....in fact i was watching an Adobe TV segment that talked specifically about 10bit and the BIG MISCONCEPTION that PPro cannot output 10bit....they said UNTRUE....

That said, i have NO IDEA.....but would be very suspicious that they would not output 10bit and kind of counter productive. Can you point to some place on the web that gives a clear statement about that? I'll do some research as well to find where it says otherwise...but they did make no distinction between Mac and PC and i'm not sure why they would only output 8bit for mac and 10bit for PC.....that just sounds ridiculous..... But again, so we are not spreading rumors....you are 100% sure of that?

GTX 590: display port out---that does not allow 10bit out? or Quadro 4000 ?

Johnny,
All the explanations are in this thread, page 3,where i gave this link :

Answers from Nvidia rep and David Mc Gavran.

Got it...and Dave does confirm it...that just sucks!! So, buying a better card with 10bit output is a big WAST OF $$$ at this point in time. BUT, DAVE--hope you chime in....With Matrox in PPro---am i able to monitor 10bit? I'm told by Matrox yes, but sure seems this is all new territory and everyone is trying to catch up and figure it all out.

Also, in this case...for CUDA processing only in mind with Mac...what is recommended card?

Last Item: now abobe said about no ten bit out of graphics card and MAC.... i was just informed by Matrox that they DO have 10bit signal coming out of the Matrox card to MXO2 LE box and then of course to your 10bit monitor......MAC that is....as well as PC

No,Adobe said no 10 Bit thru the display port of the quadro 4000 for monitoring in Premiere on mac;that's all!
So,for instance, the only solution to take benefit from Rocket full debayering,Mercury hardware engine and Displayport or HDSDI(with sdi daughter card) 10 Bit monitoring of R3D in the Premiere timeline is the Quadro 4000 on PC(which gives a smooth real time full quality workflow); the choice of Matrox presets disable the Mercury hardware engine.

Jean....i have had to go into the project settings on a few occassions to change the playback engine....yesterday i had a few problems when opening a new project and setting up the Project etc...as PPro when started some how saved my previous Matrox presets even when i set up the project as RED preset....PPro kept crashing EVERY time i opened an R3d....finally after an hour or so i found out in preferences or project settings that the playback engine was Matrox and that of course would not allow me to play in the viewer the R3d's when the Red Presets were chosen...a bug no doubt and not sure if i explained that very well. BUT, found the problem and know how to fix it....but my Matrox workflow (for the moment) works just fine.

-next up is Quadro 4000---bought one at Safe Harbor online today for $735.
Back to the thread purpose : Premiere, Red Rocket, and External Monitor
When you receive it,can you confirm the common use of Red Rocket,Quadro 4000 and MXO le(with Max,i presume.) on your Mac in Premiere(presets, settings and results)?
Thank's.
