  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere, Red Rocket, and External Monitor

12 Core 2.66 GHz, 48GB Ram, Internal 4 Drive Raid 0, SSD Boot drive, Red Rocket, Quadro 4000 + ATI 5870, BM Decklink Extreme HD 3D... playback from PP through DL out to SDI is rough but playback on the system monitor at 4k is silky smooth. Maybe I'm missing a setting in the BM Project Setup.

I will try to review all this issue, and issue my view over the weekend. I am working on 3 project simultaneously, so I am a bit stressed... ;-)

Yes,this is for instance the only Adobe approved solution for 10 bit HDSDI out from the timeline of Premiere;they are working on solutions with BM and others cards.
The Red Rocket makes the full debayering.

I believe this is INCORRECT. Matrox MXO2 LE or MXO2.....i believe is another solution. I'm just in the middle of setting up my machine with PP; rocket external monitor and Matrox....I used MXO2 LE with FCP for 10bit monitoring and according to Matrox, the same can be done with Premier.

At the moment, i'm struggling with getting my Rocket card to work in Premier...seems i've done every new download and upgrade. The ONLY thing i HAVE NOT done is donwload: RED Adobe CS4 Installer from RED Support....i have not done that since it's so old and says CS4......Anyone know if that is the missing link and SHOULD it be installed for CS5.5 users?

Upon tackling this issue, i'll be moving on to my Matrox setup and report back in a new thread.

Which results did you get with 2K timeline in FCP and what is your machine?
Interested by the results with Premiere.

Jean,
LOVED the MXO2 LE with FCP....I NEVER used it with their RED 2k workflow since (at the time) my workflow was RCX-transcode to prores 4444 or 422hq, then take those files into FCP with the Matrox easy setup for Prores 422HQ....i then went out HDMI to my 50" Panasonic Plasma and could switch to SDI out to my FSI monitor----color correct/perfect RESULTS for my grading session using either 3 way color corrector OR COLOR.

.....Tomorrow i begin my QUEST on HOW to setup Matrox for Premier....i have it all plugged in and working and see all the presets for it now...i have just not tried them. I will be SEARCHING ANY OTHER USERS out there for TIPS....at end, when i am beaten and tired but pull it off, I'll post a thread on HOW TO (with the Matrox MXO2).

Edit: Using Mac Desktop: Intel processor; 32gig ram; 2.26 hz; rocket card; 4 way esata bay connected to (2) 5 bay hot swaps for 30TB storage.

Johnny, you were monitoring Prores files in FCP;it's an other story.Try with the 2K Matrox preset in Premiere with Rocket.

Hi Jean,
Yes, was using a preset for Prores 422HQ files...and there were others up to 2k. I have yet to work on HOW to connect up PP and Matrox....or rather what settings inside of Premier i need to setup in order to view out of Matrox.....I've just yet to dig into that...BUT, are you using it as well? I'd love to just get the straight line to how to or where to set up presets in PPro for matrox. Now, can you tell me what the Nvidia card will do when i also have the rocket card? i was under the impression that only one card will do the work -- either Rocket or Nvidia---is that not the case? or are you getting to the point meaning....use Rocket Card for acceleration and monitor my video out of an Nvidia card?? if so, which card? because it would be best to monitor 10bit and then the card would need to support that either using display port/hdmi or sdi--then next item in the equation is if the monitor is a color correct monitor---and in my case i have an FSI that's color correct and an SDI connection...so even though some cards will go out 10bit, hard to find a color correct monitor in display or hdmi. usually they are SDI.
...but please do share with me....
thanks.....

I don't use the Matrox box(no Rocket, and no Quadro too, only a Geforce GTX285 on PC) but they claim they benefit from the Nvidia Mercury engine.
In Premiere,in the project window you should among others(SD,HD,RED) find the Matrox presets(from SD to 2K).Try 2K Matrox,Rocket activation, hardware Mercury engine on(if Mac Premiere approved Nvidia card ),in the player(bottom) menu window, choose full resolution and(right clic in the player window) Matrox hardware for external monitoring and see...when you open a R3D 4K file if you get RT 10 bit HDSDI monitoring. In this scenario, the Rocket gives full RT debayering,Nvidia gives the GUI and RT Adobe effects and the MXO 10 bit HDSDI monitoring.
The solution i am sure because Adobe tested for 10 bit hdsdi monitoring in Premiere is Quadro 4000 or more +SDI on PC,and Quadro 4000 or more for 10 bit displayport on PC(works with HP Dreamcolor monitor). With HDMI : 8 bit.
Other solutions may arise.

lets check in on this tomorrow......had a Looooong day editing some footage and just this moment i setup the matrox and i love it when it just works....got output to my HDMI monitor and tomorrow i'll be able to verify settings etc.....and what i'm getting for output....i do not see for some reason a 2k workflow on the presets.....but that setting does exist on FCP.....but, i'm almost sure i'm missing something. I really only spent 8mins just connecting it all and opening a project and chose settings with matrox presets...so its all there. more manana.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads and could use some advice. I have two Matrox Axios that qualify for a Loyalty discount on a Matrox MXO2, LE, or Rack. It ends Friday. I'm not sure what to build next. Our edit stations are on their last legs. We need to edit Red footage and need to monitor Surround 5.1 out. I use Premiere and don't see myself going to FCP.
Any preferred solutions?
Thanks,
lael

Are these MXO2 boxes worth the money for what they do? Or are there better options?

I think you get different answers from folks using different or OTHER I/O boxes. I personally love the MXO2 AND, it's portable. I was a diehard user in FCP....i'm just now setting it up for PPro....i got signal out to my 50" plasma at 10bit last night...so pretty happy so far.....

Right click the clip, and the option will be there.

Or you could: Edit > Preferences > General > Default Scale To Frame Size
That way, you don't have to manually do it to every clip, and if you feel the need to punch in, just Right-Click and un-check "Scale to Frame Size"

After getting burned by buying the AJA 3G Kona card only to get it home and discover that Red Rocket acceleration disabled when using the Aja presets I'm hesitant to order the nVidia Quadro/SDI combo since the SDI card is made-to-order apparently. No returns.

I've been waiting since NAB for a vendor/Adobe to anounce a Red monitoring solution. Still waiting...

From Adobe labs : The Nvidia daughter SDI card of quadro 4000 in Premiere is seen as the second GPU port so you keep the Adobe player and Adobe presets, enabling the use of the Rocket and hardware Mercury engine of the Quadro with Red Adobe presets.

Can you elaborate?R3D?Matrox preset?RT?

So i now play ANYTHING in timeline of PPro and have a timeline setup of 1920x1080 in PPro....and drop any clips on timeline--R3d, mxf, prores and output via HDMI to my Plasma. Also, i can output via Matrox and SDI out to my Color monitor...so im pretty happy about that...and simultaneous output as well. At this time, Matrox does NOT have a Red 2k preset, but i talked to them yesterday and it's on the list....they have it for FCP, so likely coming for PPro.
