  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere CS5

Believe me when i say that mercury engine is not hyped enough! I red it works with newer quadros and gtx 285, maybe they'll add more in the future. I am using a quadro cx, that is the same as a quadro 4800. When i use it i get the feeling i am using a really expensive machine, like a 100k computer with dedicated hardware, and all i am using is a normal pc with a nice card inside. Before CS5 i felt the quadro was overpriced, now i feel is the cheapest greatest thing that happened in NLE world. I really don't know if apple or avid will pull something like this. The idea of buying the rocket is really fadeing away fast. I am looking fordward for final release of adobe CS5. Obin, i know exactly what you feel, i can't wait for every adobe reduser to try this!!!!

The interface in AE and PP both feel about 3 generations behind PS. They really need to clean a lot of stuff up, simplify a lot of things. Why can't I access things like "Comp Settings" or "Add to Render Queue" by right clicking a Comp in AE? That's just silly.

Also, this is longer term, but it is also just silly in my opinion that AE and PP are still two programs. Dynamic Link ... cumbersome is not even a strong enough word. Just combine 'em.

I just watched a video with Adobe guys touting CS5 64bit capabilities.
http://www.postmagazine.com/Media/VideoLibrary/Adobe7 Dan Web.mov

The interviews made me realize that Adobe has excellent engineers but zero knowledge about professional editing. Its like putting a jet engine into a purported race-car with no steering wheel or tires. Premiere Pro CS4 as it stands has few valuable Professional editing features.

I do understand they are re-writing the entire suite for 64 bits, such an undertaking takes some effort and resources. But common sense dictates if architects are going to re-build a fort, they have to get detailed information from the generals or soldiers about the weaknesses of the old fort and recommendations on how the new fort will best serve them. This production cycle should have been the best time to take the fat out of AE and make it a lean mean compositing machine or make a real Premiere "PRO".

For anyone on this forum to think Apple is sleeping or not listening is a huge mistake. Apple is a design and marketing company. Take a look at all their pro apps, they have collaborated with professionals in each specific industry to release products with exceptional user experiences. 64 bit is their new catch phrase. From Snow Leopard to Logic al their apps is moving in that direction. Final cut studio is a half a billion dollar revenue product for Apple, they will not take its development lightly. Apple Motion has been GPU accelerated for a long time, there is nothing CS5 is doing that Apple can't potentially do. Just like Adobe they have been reported to be re-writing all their apps to 64 bit from scratch, but unlike Adobe they are not scared to go after the big Dogs like Autodesk or Avid. We all know down the line they will sell OSX as an expensive stand alone "Operating System for regular PC's, further increasing their market reach with their pro apps. Thats inevitable.

I do realize that as a software only company Adobe has to cater to a prosumer user base than they would professionals, but why then would they develop pro apps like coldfusion, Flex etc.

I know me and a million other worldwide Pro users would pay $1500 for Adobe Smoke (PPRO, AE, AUDITION, COLOR, 3D)

Do not get me wrong Adobe is an application programming genius and leader in many professional fields, photography, print, web, Multimedia etc. But when it comes to Film and video, they are still years behind. Simply because they fail to take advice from industry user/technologist like Ben Grossman, Stu M, Gareth Edwards, etc etc, Simply put these guys have been hammering at Adobe's doors for the past decade, have built businesses on Adobe's apps but have only been invited in to only demo finished products. Adobe Should have been paying these guys to design user experiences and products. Remember Stu designed Magic bullet, colorista, looks and Mojo for Red Giant. Adobe has spent most of its time relying on web video and motion graphics experts, which is not a bad thing, but REALLY!!!!!!! AE should be renamed "Adobe motion graphics animation thingy"

I HOPE SOMEONE FROM ADOBE IS READING THIS

Hmm Obin somehow I don't believe you, it sounds too good to be true."Redcine Quality color"!!! I don't even see that in the new Redcine X.

What about final debayer and rendering? how fast is that in CS5?

it's not as fast as it should be yet but yea color is very nice for once!

One thing I'd love to see in CS5 - continue editing whilst playing back from the timeline - why oh why does playback stop EVERY time I touch anything? C'MON Adobe, we CAN multitask ya know - try this with Edius - it saves millions of keystrokes daily.

I want: - The clone tool to follow trackers
- An easy way of combining trackers to make a single one (oversampling tracker info)
- An easy way to hook one tracker to another - so I can have an offset point anywhere I want that follows another tracker's motion.
- Large PP projects to load within AE - I want to be able to chose which part of a 90 minute timeline to load into AE - a simple thing really - an 'Import whole Sequence or import range?" dialogue box would do the trick. Try loading a fast-cut feature in AE - you can't.
- Better integration of AE features in Premiere - maybe a special version of Premiere for those of us who have also bought AE.
- A way of using proxies that does not involve any tricks. Editing content-only, sometimes all we need is 480p to do an initial rough-cut if we know what the original footage looks like. We'd just need a "replace with file" right-click option, or a "replace this folder with that folder" menu item, so we could, say, tell Premiere to replace the folder "proxies" with the folder "4K original files" or whatever. Premiere could automatically look for matches in file names other than their extensions.
- A way of re-lettering drives. We are always using external drives with lots of sub-folders. Sometimes teh drive letter does not match on a second machine. How about a "Drive G = Drive H" (you input letters how you want) menu?
I don't want: more gadget-features I will never, ever use. No more 3D page curls or mosaic effects please.

Well,

I just heard that Adobe has a position open for manager of the Premiere Pro team?! So, this close to the CS5 launch, this is not a good sign of stability and the coming of things we've asked for...Just hoping I'm wrong on this, but history has mostly proven otherwise.

Its interesting because I am in the market for a new GPU. Got the option to get a Quadro FX4600 which at the moment is not listed as supported by Mercury Engine, however i expect the supported software to widen closer and soon after release.

Looks like its tricky to see what to get at this point. The GTX's are not listed either. Can't really wait for any longer than a month. Need my new workstation now.

To be honest though I am semi lost in the GPU market. I know that GTX cards tend to be profiled for gaming and FX are good high end graphics/3D. I do an equal mix of 2/3D effects with AE, Fusion, Maya, Vue, Zbrush et al, yet obviously a lot of editing and am buying a scarlet 2/3" what do people recommend? Should I stick with the FX series? AE tends to be more RAM dependent than GPU anyway so FX I would guess will help the 3D but what about playing with RED footage? Not sure how Fusion works though is it RAM or GPU?

Tim, gtx 285 is listed as compatible. Also i noticed that people thinks that fermi replaces cuda, and there are two different things. Go with gtx 285, cheaper than the quadros and shouldn't be different in performance. That card with CS5 should do great. CS5 has some surprises on the way! You will all be surprised. If you want real time editing with .R3D files, i think that will be the only solution. It's like a rocket, but really cheaper, without the 4K output and inside premiere, with the addition of many realtime effects

I also say that the GTX285 would be a good choice at the moment. It's an affordable < $300 card that will work with CS5 and is a solid all-around performer. Fermi is definitely something to look at in the near future though. But I would wait and see what is actually supported and what will be supported before spending money on the Quadro cards. None of the Quadro cards will buy you any more speed compared to their counterpart GeForce series card. What you get with the Quadro is typically some more memory and a few extra hardware features like stencil buffers, multiple overlay planes, more hardware lights, etc.. Stuff that can make a huge difference, if the application supports it.

If you don't need to have a card now, then wait. But if you do need one, the GTX 285 is a safe bet for something that will hold you over until you know what you really want. It may even fit your needs as it is. Not too shabby at all, performs very well in most situations.

The FX4600 is NOT Cuda supported. However, the FX4800 is. As Jeff pointed out the GTX285 is a great card for the money and will accelerate CS5's playback performance vastly.

I'd suppose the main difference would be more tracks accelerated by the FX4800 due to the larger memory. If you don't want to do heavy compositing in PPro, I'd say the GTX 285 should be fine.

Interesting. Thanks for pointers. If the GTX 295 becomes listed as compatible is it worth pickin up rather than the GTX 285 - if I can get one cheaper than RRP?

By the looks of things the new GTX cards that are being released are being slated for being power hungry and not outstanding in performance. It is hard to say till they are actually released. I might buy a GTX 285 then upgrade in six months when the CS5 has come out and the compatibility list is adjusted properly.

It seems as though the new Nvidia GTX480 product will probably support Mercury as it has Cuda technology.

Provided you have enough fans in your PC case, it would be much faster than the GTX295.

I haven't heard definitively yet from Adobe whether they'll support Mercury in CS5, though.

The question between something like the GTX285 and a Quadro is whether CS5 will support parallel processing across multiple GPU's. If a GTX285 can do 3k redcode real time for Scarlet I would be happy. Support for multiple GPU's can take you into super computer render farm territory for a very modest cost though.

the quadro fx4600 is indeed cuda enabled.

I'll keep my ear to the ground and see what happens. April is looking to be a very interesting month.

my guess is that they are only listing cards they have physically tested. the current nvidia driver release which includes the officially supported fx4800 gives CUDA 3.0 support to the following cards:FX 350, FX 3800, FX 1700, FX 540, CX, FX 4600, FX 4000, FX 5600, FX 4700 X2, FX 3700, FX 3400/4400, FX 570, FX 380, FX 560, FX 370, FX 5500, FX 580, FX 1500, FX 4800, FX 370 Low Profile, FX 3450, FX 4500, FX 3500, FX 1400, FX 1800, FX 4500 X2, FX 5800, FX 550
