  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Premiere CS5

This looks like it has a long way to go. First they want you to transcode the video into their format. Second it's pretty buggy in Premiere Pro. Adjusting the settings doesn't always show up in the timeline, and random frames of previous adjustments show up when you scrub.

Hopefully this is more robust by the time CS5 ships.

Well, my experience tells me that it opens any raw files that are supported in the adobe camera raw application.. I've tried .cr2 and .nef and it worked fine..
yeah, it is buggy.. the windows gets opened by its own when you start the project in ppro.. but, for AE it works fine.. never seen any problems so far..
and remember its still beta version.. and you'd only use it for stills and timelapses that were shot using digital still raw cameras.. another usage is with motion cameras that shoots DNG format.. ie, new silicon imaging 3D camera and the upcoming ikonoskop a-cam dII.. those the ones I remember now..

Unfortunately, I'm under NDA on some things but here's what I can say.

Future versions of Premiere and After Effects are 64 bit only.

In future versions of Premiere you will see outstanding playback performance due to Mercury playback engine. It's very impressive.

You should check out Adobe Story and Catalyst. Interesting stuff there.

Adobe is listening. Keep your comments coming because they are being passed along to Adobe team. Hopefully by staying in touch with their userbase and future userbase, they will be able to implement features that users want and repair bugs in a reasonable timeframe. I'm a fan of Apple and Final Cut Pro. It's what I use for most of my editing these days. However, Apple works completely opposite from Red and Adobe. No information, no roadmap, closed communication with community. Sure, there are beta testers and people on the inside who are privy to information under very strict NDA but the perception I'm seeing from a lot of users, especially around here is that Apple doesn't care about Pro Apps. I don't necessarily agree with that. I think they care, and I'm sure they have an internal roadmap, but there's very little enthusiasm being built up on the outside. To me, the three A's all have a lot of work to do. We are moving into a time period where great innovation is happening in acquisition, and there needs to be great innovation in our editing tools as well. Two examples of this are 3D and RAW. There is a very sophisticated userbase with NLEs and they are craving tools that allow them to get their work done efficiently and with great power. They crave GUIs that make sense. They crave the ability to customize the NLE to fit their workflows. To me, this race is won by whoever is most in touch with the large community of editors around the world. Who is able to realize that the key to an NLE is allow the editor to focus on creativity and less about technical issues, workarounds, and to a certain extent workflow. I'll borrow a phrase said by a friend of mine "Take the work out of workflow".

Sorry for getting offtrack there, but it's something that interests me very much as I watch the evolution of NLEs.

I can say that the folks on here are going to be very happy with the color in future versions of Premiere with r3d files. :) about knocked me out when I installed a new beta build in the past few weeks.

Think REDCINE quality color, rich, beautiful, saturated, grain-less footage.

I am now happy for the first time with color INSIDE the editor.:drool5::tongue_smilie:

Hmm Obin somehow I don't believe you, it sounds too good to be true."Redcine Quality color"!!! I don't even see that in the new Redcine X.

What about final debayer and rendering? how fast is that in CS5?

Adobe Camera RAW plugin for Premiere Pro is all I ask!!!!!!!

You can say the same thing about Sony and Vegas. Non Existent communication with userbase, except to delete posts on their forum. Not even sure they have enough programming talent to keep the product moving forward.

These companies need ambassadors to the users. And it's not very hard these days with all of the virtual spaces available to communicate. How many people on here would be thrilled if there was even one representative from Apple's Pro Apps division who chimed in occasionally to say, hey guys can't say much but the good news is we are working on a future version of FCP that is going to expand Redcode capabilities.

It's not telling you much, but it keeps the legion of FCP users intrigued and it lets them know that Apple is still developing new stuff. I know a lot of us, just assume this is happening behind closed doors and we'll take a wait and see approach. But a lot of others would be very happy to just see some effort. And I'm not talking about Reduser exclusively. They should be hitting a lot of the popular forums and virtual communities.

That's just my .02, I don't have anything against Apple. I like those guys. I just think some more communication might be in order in this day and age of social media.

Agreed. It's not the new RedColor/RedGamma yet, but those of us beta testing are pushing from the inside to get it implemented ASAP (not just for CS5 but also as an updated plugin for CS4). And with the new 10K width limit, editing 4.5K is doable today :)

Mercury is also a BIG DEAL.... ;)

Wow @ 10K limit.
Thanks for sharing Paul

So, Paul, there is an updated plugin version for CS4 in the works ? I thought that Adobe wouldn't release anything new for R3D before CS5 and 64 bits platforms.

It would be nice to hear from Adobe about this plugin, as Red seems reluctant to talk about it.

I agree with this - it can be a bit daunting to not hear anything until they announce the full product! That said, I'm really excited to see what Apple does with the next version of Final Cut Studio - judging by Logic switching to 64 bit recently I'm guessing that Final Cut will, and I'm hoping for a nicer interface as well (I'm guessing that it will be redone in Cocoa). Not that the interface is terrible, but it would be nice to dock some of the windows together...

As for Premiere, what I would love to see is better integration with After Effects. I've used Dynamic Link but it was way too slow, so the only thing I could do was to import my Premiere projects into After Effects to do a bit of colour correction and my titles and things, but if my edit changes at all then there's no way to change it without a lot of work... And I've had problems with edit points being a few frames out doing this too (this was in CS3 though, so I don't know if it's improved).

Because of this, I am jumping on to Final Cut as soon as the next version comes out (even if I didn't have a Mac it would probably be worth getting one for Color alone) and while I will probably buy Photoshop and After Effects CS5 for compositing and motion titles, I don't think I'll bother with Premiere (although I might get it because it will probably be cheapest to buy the Production suite, but I doubt I'll use it).

I have a question for those of you who have the possibility to beta test the new CS5... is mercury still depending on QuadroFX cards or do Geforce cards with Cuda work the same? And if there is a difference in speed... how big is it? Are there any informations if the new nVidia Fermi will support CS5 or how much the speed advantages of those new cards will be?

I love Premiere. And while it's not popular on here, I also love Cineform. When I am done editing, I need something to render too, a high quality file that I can go back to for various masters.. Cineform does this just fine.

Premiere and Apple remind me of the tortise and the hair. Final Cut blew through the race and Adobe continues to plod along.

However, Development on the FCP side is slowinig, and Adobe CONTINUES to plod along. If they get their timecode issues worked out, and also their color correction, then FCP will begin having some real problems.

I use Dynamic Link all the time and it works great for me. I think there were improvements made in CS4. I did notice that the more powerful computer you have, the better it works. I've done some projects that were nothing but interviews shot in front of green screen, and I've built the project in PPro, but sent out all the shots to AE (through DL) for keying, then added graphics from AE through Dynamic Link...worked fine.

Yes. We use CineForm on a daily basis, on both platforms. It's our backbone.

Since a week CineForm is finally as quick and snappy on FCP as ProRes - with CineForm AVIs and of course CineForm MOVs. BTW, there are no gamma shifts on the PC platform, great for finishing.

Premiere and Apple remind me of the tortise and the hair. Final Cut blew through the race and Adobe continues to plod along.

I never found Apple particular innovative and now lazy. They just understood that a cheaper alternative to Avid would have a big impact on their hardware. So they developed FCP to meet the requirements of the industry which Adobe missed completely.

I'm not sure wether Apple is slowing down the development of FCP, they just have a much more silent development circle regarding leaking information. Adobe on the other hand is literally crying loud out - if we look at what Mercury can do and how it is hyped. Do we know what FCP has in the works?

Premier Pro's user base is traditionally the pro-sumer, editing on the family's home-pc ambitious videos. Such a user finds an Apple PC too expensive (not worth it) and FCP not necessary. And she/he is right.

But for most of the pros out there Premier Pro is more or less a plug-in for AE. CS5 will change that to a certain extend. But to convince a seasoned editor to use Premier Pro and not Avid or FCP is another story. And in the unlikely case she/he might look into it they will search for video-audio syncing via TC and wont find it, at least not in CS4. But this a very basic NLE function, a deal breaker for most professionals.

Adobe's Mercury engine is impressive. It will help to sell Premier Pro. But will it push it into the realm of Avid and FCP?

Wish I had gone with you early on down the CineForm path with CS3 instead of spending the budget on CS4.
