  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just want to get this part of the workflow clear in my mind so I can explain it to the various writers, producers etc I'll be working with.

Say I have an interview that lasts 30 min shot in one continuous take. I take it there is no problem with one file that big screening RED proxies in Quicktime/ FCP/RedAlert RedCine?

OK now my Producer wants to screen it on his Apple Laptop that night. He/she wants to pick clips from the interview, note the in out of the timecode for each clip chosen, and give me a list of clips that can then be brought into FCP.

Obviously I don't want to transcode the whole 30min clip.

-should the producer just use quicktime on the laptop to screen and take time code notes or would RedAlert or Red Cine be better for this? What is simpilist?

-when it's time for me to isolate the clips from the producer's notes can I do a rough edit on RedCine or RedAlert so as I only have to load (transcode) those clips into FCP and not the whole 30 minute interview?

What is the best way to do this?

Hi --I rewrote the question to make it clearer. Sorry if it's a bit nooby but I don't yet have the camera or the FCP NLE system YET (I'm moving from a tape based PC NLE). What I do have is a lot of skeptical clients and producers who are very nervous about the RED post workflow.

i see,
you are asking if redcine/redalert can create multiple in and out points...
i didn`t test this.
should be easy to find out...

ok this is maybe useful to start with

quote kevin stanley from red

If you have multiple shots in the timeline and you move the scrub bar over one of them in the timeline you can go to the Shot Tab and use the frame count sliders to adjust the in/out point for just that clip. (not the i/o buttons above the timeline). Is this what you are trying to achieve?

Try this:
Open the proxie in FCS and note the ins/outs. Then use Ian Bloom's Crimson (www.crimsonworkflow.com) to export an EDL for REDCINE and then export the shots you need from REDCINE in the appropriate format.

Make sure the REDCODE codec is installed on the producer's machine, it's FCS 2, running Leopard and Quicktime 7.4.5. Also, make sure high precision YUV is checked in FCS.

And bring in the smallest proxie... I think it's the _F - very bottom one.

this sort of thing is where you should just use the proxies. give the producer a copy of the R3D file and the accompanying quicktime proxies in a folder together (either from the camera or red alert)

he can play the proxies in quicktime viewer, note down the timecodes then you can use them either in log and transfer or redcine later. proxies work fine for cuts only editing like this, I don't see the point of transcoding for such a simple task.

The Producers will not have FCS on their laptop, only a quicktime player which I am told will show camera timecode while scrubbing (the proxies).

So for log and transfer, and REDCINE, I can select timecode in's and out's and only those clips will be transcoded/exported?
