I am in the market for a later generation Red camera.
For me (a wild life filmmaker) higher frame rates, low light performance are important, as is a very stable pre-record function. I narrowed the options down to V-Raptor S35 and Komodo X.
My current camera is an Epic Dragon 6K. The camera works flawlessly, except for pre-record. Pre-record used to work perfect and flawless until mid-2016 when my camera started eating media-cards and Red published a new protocol for the use of pre-record (secure format). That just did not work. Every time when using pre-record (+ securely formatted media) my camera shuts down after a minute or so. New red mags never solved this issue, not did the fans2.0.
Nonetheless, I stayed with Red and kept using my Epic Dragon because I love the image quality and next to pre-record issues, my camera never let me down. The pre-record issues made me decide to skip DSMC2 because that generation also stores the pre-record temp. files onto the media itself, and necessity for secure format when using pre-record remained.
Then came V-Raptor s35 and Komodo x. And since my camera is already ten years old, I am considering replacing it.
V-Raptor uses an internal cache to store the temp files. So I think V-raptor (not x) will be the safest choice for me. (Also 8k, wider DR, higher frame-rates, more future-proof, etc.). But it is expensive for an indie wild life filmmaker. So I would love to hear more about Komodo x and pre-record.
Komodo x does not use a cache to store the temp files, but stores these onto the media. And I wonder if that will cause a future problem.
So my question is this: does anyone uses pre-recording a lot and have you experienced difficulties?
Also: the rf-mount (v-raptor s35) is not ideal for me, since I use Nikon-f zoom- and macro-lenses. What would the ‘beter’ lens adapter be for this?
Thanks, Willem
