Pre record reliable?

We use pre record all the time. But sometimes it feels as if its not recording as far back in time. Yesterday I waited for an eagle to fly for 30min. When it flew it took maybe 3 seconds before I presed record and then I missed the start. Prerecord was on 8 seconds and I was filming 5k 96fps.
Now I increased to 20sec but that will create huge slow mo files and eat memory.

I might be wrong, but I think the pre-record time is based on the project frame-rate.
Since you are overcranking at four times that rate, it worked out to 2 seconds in realtime.

At 96fps all your files will be four times the size, no way to avoid that.

Hi Todd, thanks for chipping in. I did some tests to check exactly what you suggest and from my tests it is 8 seconds *realtime* so with 4x slow motion the recorded size is actually 4x8=32s.

I will do some more tests to be completely 100%.

I use a cinegears start/ stop remote. Sometimes it cancels pre-record rather than recording. If I press pre- record on the camera itself the remote 95% of the time triggers record (too risky to use so lately I haven't been using pre- record combined with remote)

Do you use a start/stop remote?

I'm 99% pre-record is in seconds regardless of your frame rate

The Red Tech video on Pre-Record mentions part way through that it's based on frames, but then switches over into addressing it based on seconds. I'm curious to hear how this pans out, as Pre-Rec is something I hope to start taking advantage of.

Hiya, I would love to use a remote trigger, but had similar problems to what you mentioned so I'm manually pressing the shutter (and shaking the camera a bit!).

I shot in 25fps for project frame rate. I did several test. I just pressed record and stopped for 1 second and I got very long prerecorded material. If I had 200fps then I got minutes of pre recorded.

Will do more tests, but in the middle of the jungle so all tests are a bit harder to do!
