I would like to see a feature that let the camera store all data for 1/2 second in buffer so when I fire I am grabbing just before I press, often grabbing the right moment instead of just half a second too late. I would assume this would take more battery maybe?

We could set this up as a setting much like a DVR which allows you to start recording for a certain time before and after a show's conventional time slot. Maybe this could be user adjustable and have up to several seconds of pre-recording. I can't tell you how many amazing shots I have missed by being just a second late.

Anyone else think this would be nice?

Pre-Record.

Pre-Record.

It uses the attached media and you can set the duration to be up to 30 sec.

You can choose between 10 seconds or 30 seconds of Pre-Record, or are there more durations options?
I think you also have to format the media when the Pre-Record option is checked otherwise it will not be assigned to the media. Am I correct?

So could the Scarlet effectively be ready to shoot in an instant, say if it was in standby for a long while? Providing I could supply enough battery power to the camera, I need to shoot in the cold, where the camera will be just set up and ready, but can have no real delay once I need to roll. I was thinking that this was one area where shooting on film ( 16mm in my case ) still had the advantage.
Are there any Red shooters who have some experience in this kind of situation, who can say how well this works in the real world?

There's no such thing as "standby mode" the Red One.
It's always ready for instant Recording once the camera is booted up.

For Scarlet, yes that's the intent.

For RED ONE, as Mark commented, because it's not ASIC based you need to wait for the camera to boot up first...

Thanks, if I understand what you've said correctly and what Jim said earlier in the year re ASIC, the start up/boot/power management for the Scarlet and Epic is an entirely new process from the way the Red One functions. So hopefully there'll be some more news on this in the upcoming Scarlet announcements?

It's already been said that Scarlet and Epic will boot in a matter of a few seconds (like 2 if memory serves correct??).

OK. So how come I checked the Pre-Record option and it didn't Pre-Record?

Checking the Pre-Record option changes the way the camera works when you press the record button.

With it enabled...press RECORD once to start pre-record, a second time to transition to record, and a third time to stop record.

Sorry if I'm mistaken, but I think it's UNDO + RECORD to start pre-record.

PRE-RECORD (RED ONE Operations Guide - Build 21 v21.3.1 - page 56)

"Pre-Record enables a continuous loop recording of definable duration (10 or 30 seconds) that permits continuous video and audio capture “before the event” i.e. before RECORD is pushed.

When enabled, pre-record starts recording 1-second chunks of video and audio to the digital magazine. At the end of the selected pre-record period, the first chunk is overwritten.

If the RECORD button is pushed while in pre-record, pre-record mode is terminated and a normal record is enabled. The timecode value and clip name are carried over between modes.

A typical clip folder in this scenario looks as follows:
This specific clip includes eleven .R3D files, the first ten of which correspond to the pre-record and the eleventh file corresponds to the normal record period. All have the same clip name.

NOTE: On playback on camera or in the RED Alert! ® or any QuickTime application, these eleven individual .R3D files are seen as a single continuous video clip.

1. To enable PRE-RECORD, push in or down on joystick to place checkmark in PRE-RECORD check- box.

2. DURATION box will highlight to allow you to choose between 10 SEC and 30SEC.

3. Twist joystick to change the highlighted DURATION box to the desired setting.

4. Move joystick right or up to select and exit.

To commence pre-record, push both the UNDO key and the RECORD key. The camera will commence prerecord, indicated by the record tally light and timecode changing to yellow.

To enter record, push the RECORD key. This will be indicated by the record tally light and timecode changing to red. To terminate pre-record, push the RECORD key a second time.

NOTE: When using Pre-Record, the Edge Code written to the digital magazine can become discon- tinuous between clips, however Time Code is unaffected."
