WOW! Scarlet fever is hitting hard! People have become arrogant as if they have been shooting 4k for most there lives, calm down everyone and play nice, and I hate to tell you that 1080p output is the standard in most everything, soo it's not dead it's beautiful and to say it is dead is soo wrong on many levels!:chillpill:

Bart,

Why do we need threads like this?

I honestly don't understand?

In no way would I like to start a 6 page argument either, but I really would like to know what you plan on accomplishing with this...

because it's true and need to be addressed nobody has a scarlet yet and already think they are David Fincher and poo pooing everything else ppl are saying

Everyone ignore....and move along...

+1.

We don't need 9,000 posts on this subject over the course of 4 years. Everything of any substance to be said 4 years ago was said.

Even for 480p I would be happy to have 8k of data to start from for VFX.
Someone's client on a low end corporate video probably wouldn't care if you shot it on an iPhone.

FYI I've had corporate execs who ask why 5D footage was blurry. And I've heard top end DPs who say it's plenty sharp. There's no consensus.

Ivy Bridge is around the corner, I think 4k is more relevant then ever since 4k consumer monitors will be out quite soon to accompany the GPU chip sets...

1080p has it place and so does 4k, both beautiful. Most normal consumers will never afford a 4k monitor/tv/projector so 1080p is fine for a good while I think.

The options in your poll are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, my opinion in long form:

No, 1080 is not dead -- yet (480 NTSC & 576 PAL aren't completely dead either, but given the current options, who wants to watch it anymore, much less shoot for those formats) ; 1080 is nice, until you have seen proper 4k; 4k and beyond IS the cutting edge of current and will be the norm in the future, however I doubt within 1 yr; most people (consumers) don't yet know about 4k, because most have yet to experience it; When done correctly, EVERYONE can tell the difference between 1080/2k and 4k -- it is seriously not even a close comparison; 1080 and 4k on the web are almost no difference, by-and-large because of the compression (often multiple stages of compression).

4k? 1080? Acquisition? Delivery?

Clearly 1080p delivery is very strong and will be for many years. 4k bayer acquisition absolutely has its uses for stereoscopic and vfx and theatrical release as do even higher resolution acquisition formats, and 3k bayer is still good for sharp 1080p delivery.

At the moment more than 3k bayer and more than 1080p recording could probably be regarded overkill for nearly all content that is not for theatrical release or for stereo or vfx work. That said, 4k generally doesn't hurt.

Which people are you talking about?

LOL just had a funny thought could you imagine ppl that have just bought there first HD tv only to find out 4k is coming out and bluray is going 4k LOL not gonna happen anytime soon but his would suck for some ppl

Jon is right about compression being relevant to this discussion. You can compress a 4k or 2k image to the point where its bit rate is less then SD footage... So yes the aspect ratio would be bigger, but the actual data can be the same or worse... Lots of HD stuff gets so lossy it defeats the purpose I feel. That is the hidden marketing scheme with distribution, they brag about the aspect ratio while compressing it to the point where SD and HD to them is the same bit rate effectively, therefore the same bandwidth for them and storage for them. Consumers don't know enough to figure this stuff out though

It comes down to where each person associates in the lifecycle
