I am seriously considering buying a RED ONE.
Initially I had wanted a FF35 Scarlet but the wait is killing me.
There are two questions lingering in my mind deterring me from clicking "checkout".
I figured reduser would be the best place for answers.

Question #1:Can Mysterium-X be built into new RED ONES or can they only be modified at a later date?

Question #2: Do new RED ONES come with the lastest software build?

Thanks

Hi Sterling,

RED has stated that the RED One will continue to ship with the original Mysterium chip for the time being. The stated reason was that priority delivery of MX chips should go to existing RED owners.

That makes a lot of sense to me.

Full disclosure, I own a RED, and I've paid for the upgrade, so I'm not unbiased.

IMHO The software build is a non issue.

You would get the build that was current when they shipped your camera, but upgrading firmware is super easy, it's really nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Both. I think Jim said that they can put MX sensor into a new Red One. You need to pay for the upgrade, but it is still something like $200,000 cheaper than it's nearest competitor...anyway, the wait is killing you, so you know what I'm talking about.

Just place the order online and contact your sales rep to nail down the details. They will tailor it to your requirements. I found the sales team very responsive and helpful and the service is very friendly and personal.

As Stephen said, your R1 can be upgraded to the M-X sensor, but first when all the other R1s have been upgraded. All R1s ordered now will ship with the "old" sensor, and an upgrade will be offered when your number is up. That said, you will get incredible amounts of joy out of the current sensor, and I wouldn't wait if you can afford a R1 now.

All R1's are shipped with the release firmware. If you want to try one of the beta builds, it is very easy to upgrade the firmware (and downgrade, should you or your client wish so). You'll get to love the matrix screen saver ;)

Okay I lied, I have a few more questions (that would be better suited for the forum opposed to the bomb-squad).

Question #3 Is it future proof?
If I get this beast, I WILL be satisfied. Realistically though, how long will RED support it?

Question #3 RED OVERKILL?
I am very young (<20) and currently a student. I shoot my own shorts and occasionally local commercials. Is the RED overkill? In this business, is overkill a bad thing?

Thanks again...

In my opinion RED was one of the first "Its so good I don't care too much anymore" cameras. Even the older builds that resolved 3.2K when recording 4K were extremely good, and provided you can accept the lighting requirements its hard to think of why you need a better camera.

If you do need better low light capability then Mysterium X will solve that issue for you rather well.

What do you really get with Epic or Scarlet? In my mind what you get is a live 1080p (HDMI and/or SDI) output and a faster bootup time.

Sure there are other features- but none of them matter too much in most productions- RED One is good enough.

For me not buying until Scarlet/Epic is a good decision. I NEED the live 1080p output, and the faster boot up time is important to me.

Any of the new RED's should serve a student filmmaker for rather some time. This includes the RED One with Mysterium X.

As a note to RED, if a new board for RED One could be designed to give live 1080p output and a faster bootup time- that would seriously extend service life and usability of these great cameras.

By support do you mean firmware? My guess is that the R1 will run parallel to the Epic for quite some time, so the firmware (with some limitations due to hardware ceiling) should also be developed in parallel.

Is RED 1 overkill? Sure, for today. But the footage you shoot today at "overkill" settings will be "run of the mill" in the near future.

I'm trying to put myself in your shoes. If I'm around 20, and I can actually have the money to own a R-1, I figure by doing so I get a headstart on most of the others in my peer group who are doing the same thing. That is, do you want to own a camera that has 70,000 owners or one that has 7,000(+) owners?

Make no mistake, the R-1 takes some thought to use properly. But once pou get comfortable with it, you will sneer at the little 1080 p-shooters.

Oh, and chicks can feel when a R-1 is shooting them. Seriously!:001_cool:

Sterling

Also, remember that to be an owner of a R1 costs much more than $17,500 If you haven't already, research this forum and read the many threads that cover how much it actually costs to have a useable R1 kit.

Actual cost is one of the things that makes the SCARLET kit so appealing to so many people.

but, that being said...

In the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, If you have the means, I highly recommend you pick one up. It is so choice! :001_cool:

Nothing is future proof in this industry. In 6 years RED will probably be selling a 10K 3D camera and we'll all be wondering how we ever got along in 2D 5K. Grab one today if you want the best and can afford the cost but don't be too shocked when you find yourself wanting the 'latest thing' later.
