  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post Your Scarlet-X Rig

We just started shooting a few days ago, but much more is to come. And our release date is June 30th, so everything is going to go fast from here. Feel free to like the page, and I'll try to upload clips and trailers as soon as we have some read :)

I'm hoping to continue building my rig though (since this is the main topic here). A decent tripod, follow focus and mattebox would be nice. I'm drooling at some of the O'Connor's stuff :)

Anyone know a good way to turn the Viewfactor cage system into a shoulder/mount/rig??

How come this thread has fallen that way back? nobody is buying accessories anymore for christmas? :)

To bump the thread, here's a picture of my wife holding our homemade system to emulate a small crane move! Manfrotto tripod (that technically can't handle more than 6kg), an 80$ opteka slider, and books to hold everything together.

As ridiculous as it looks, the result was surprisingly not bad. We are shooting our first feature right now, and it would just not be possible without RED. Our little Scarlet is doing wonders, and produces images that have never been possible for that kind of money.

Happy to year, and let's put our cameras to work :)

Hi Cedric,

Love it!

I've done something very similar (using a ramp to emulate a crane shot), and it worked quite well. We had a small ladder supporting two gutter beams supporting 1/4 inch water pipe, at a 45-degree angle to the ground just like your setup. The camera was then mounted on a squat (thus rigid) homemade wooden dolly with inline skate wheels, and held and guided manually just like you guys did. Very stable and smooth.

wow, it seems even more advanced. Do you have any picture of it? :)

After a year of messing with different configurations here's my current one. A couple of things you might find interesting: I have modified a Edelkrone hand grip so that I can use my right hand to focus, zoom and hold the camera (like a broadcast lens). I have switched from a Bomb EVF to using the 5" touch with the carbonite cinema scope which is working out great. Also, I have the Paralynx Arrow on it for wireless video which clients really love. The last picture shows my other setup with the addition of the Tilta shoulder pad and quick release plate, Atomos Samurai and A-box. I use this setup less due to the weight but both have their place depending on the shoot. Been through a lot of configurations so I thought I'd share so other might get ideas of what will work for them.

Nice rigs! A lot of you guys have those articulating magic arms and i was wondering if anyone could direct me to a good one (not the cheap crappy ones but also not the really expensive options :).

Adam

Manfrotto, zacuto, and Noga are the best.

Johan Koning, sr. is building a rig for my Scarlet-X which will make for an ENG/EFP-like workflow; one small part of this is a somewhat larger eyecup attached to the Bomb EVF. What you see is an old viewfinder from a Panasonic DVCPRO cam with the viewfinder-lens removed and sawed to make for a shorter barrel. It happens to fit perfectly and snugly around the EVF's rubber barrel. I removed the EVF's stock eyecup first (you can carefully slip it off). The nice thick rubber and large size make for a great viewing experience.

Super curious about how you modified that edelkrone hand grip. It is exactly what I need! Very clever.

Hey Bob

I have the mini dolly slider. Do you have stability issues with the camera "riding so high" . I ask because I was trying for something lower profile ie no bowl adapter .

Clint,

I used the hand grip listed on their site http://www.edelkrone.com/hand-strap/ took out the little bolt and then found in my box of parts a 15mm clamp. If I remember right I had to re-tap the hole. It really works great for me and it was a really easy mod.
