  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post-production

So, how fast do the processors actually have to be to edit 2K, and will this be a smooth edit, or will it be really jerky and horrible?

PowerMacs don't run RED CINÉ Apparently...

I don't know about RED-CODE (Don't have a RED yet), but I have handled 16-bit 4K uncompressed on a Quad PowerMac G5 (2.5GHz) and 2K-DCI (2048x1080) uncompressed on Dual PowerMac G5 (2GHz) without a hitch.
FCP, Color (back then $25K Silicon Color), Shake, Speed Grade, etc...

I have now the latest 8-core Mac Pro (2.8 GHz) and I think I am getting Sparco seat with 5-point harness... (The 2.8 GHz is actually faster then the 3GHz in majority things related to post and the 3.2 GHz price bump is not justified with the performance gain...)

Far more then CPU's GHz, it depends on Your graphic card (I recommend Nvidia Quadro family with at least 512MB), storage subsystem (You need a very fast RAID on eSATA or Fibre) and memory (at least 2GB for 2K)...

That's true and I haven't any income from video currently so a Mac Pro would be a bit over the top. Up to the time I will get this girl called Scarlet I will do stuff with just a Canon HV20. I thought initially that there's a chance to use a new iMac together with "her".

But after reading all this, it's probably better getting something cheaper and resell it when the scarlet comes out. I haven't much to lose because apple hardware is resold here for good prices.

In this case I recommend You get the 24" iMac (basic config with at least 2GB DDR2 memory). You want that 1920x1200 res to see the HD footage pixel for pixel. And You could easily resell the 24" iMac later. Come June and all macs will have Blu-Ray and also the new Cinema Displays (LED) will be out. By the time Scarlet is out, they (Apple) would have caught most major issues associated with new generation HW and You could safely get the new gear. For the same reason I do not recommend You buy the next-gen iMacs when they come out. The current 24" model is all "tuned out" and "issue-free".

In fact I always buy the latest top-of-the-line "previous" generation when new one is announced... (Which is why I have the latest Mac Pro and the 24" iMacs). Those are the machines that keep the highest value longest...

But the problem with the current generation is: no matte-screen option. White iMacs are exactly if not more expensive because of this. I don't know if it will change with new iMacs though, or if they follow this consumer/prosumer road. If they use simmilar graphics cards like in new macbook pros, which is likely with the imac, they will push it up to 512mb which would be a gain over current 256mb.

The new iMacs will stay glossy.
You are right about the gain with graphics, but just remember the "freezing" issues that plagued the aluminum iMacs for months soon after the release of the new generation. I am not saying this is going to be the case with the new gen. But also consider that once the new gen is out the current will drop in price. In the end it is Your call - I am just recommending...

Do you know someone working for them? ;) However I hope it won't last till June. It's more than 8 months now since their last update.

A) Yes I do, but that doesn't matter. (Who said I am not?)
B) The new iMacs release will happen before June, don't worry. I was just referring that by June all will have Blu-Ray (finally!!!) :innocent:

until very recently not even the big hollywood films were edited in HD. and when they were most used 720p, so why would we need to edit anything more than 1 or 2k. you do your edit in lower resolution and then you conform and colour correct higher res files
