Possibly the most badass pic ever

This is the best use of Red I have ever seen. Take it places, no one else has the guts to go. Anyone can shoot in a safe, friendly environment. That is why wartime photographers deserve more respect than any other photographers or cinematographers. Getting the shot is literally life and death. Sick Passion? Its his job. He is unique. You know how many indie films and music videos I have seen shot on Red? A ton. You know how many times I have seen someone take a Red into a combat environment? Only once. How about you go do something worthwhile with this cam since you don't think this is worthy enough.

I see a lot of people doing something worthwhile with the R1 – for sure…. And this people don’t have to go to war zones at all… but maybe you should go to the army instead of being interessed in cinematography… ;-)

That pictures is bad ass, but I think this one is even more bad ass:

yes that’s it

...you see the RED camera being taken into a war zone.

Great and nothing wrong with that, but …

Posing with the RI like you do with a portable anti-tank rocket launcher is actually a laughable thing to do… The story becomes stage if people say “Possibly the most badass pic ever” or “This is the best use of Red I have ever seen.”

What Scott has to say in his interview is a bit more serious as this flossy pic

The actually problem is that Scott ( MrGlory ) is producing glossy war propaganda… It would be wonderful if he uses the R1 for showing what is really going on … but I don’t see that in the little vimeo presentation… maybe he has other footage… it would be interesting to see if this footage comes closer to what is really happening in Afghanistan…

I was waiting for you to chime in Shawn, I didn't know you were on Betacam for that stuff. What a beast, even if it is lighter than a RED! I do have to disagree though, the hawk is way more badass as far as still pics go!

I swear there must be a public/cosmic consciousness, there has been virtually no movement with my goal of Combat Zone filming for about a year until last month, the right people in the Army finally contacted me about going back specifically for that purpose, and then out of the blue this picture gets posted.

I want to first explain that at the time of that picture, I was aircrew on the Combat Search and Rescue helicopter behind me, I am not branched Combat Camera (I had been in such a unit for a short period earlier). I work in video production on the civilian side when at home, and occasionally film for the military under contract, and that is why I had the camera shipped over, to prove/promote the concept of a high quality filming for posterity/history could be done by the military on a small/specialized basis, because I owned one of the first 100 and felt obligated to show it could be done.

The hurdle now is that if I go back as a civilian with a specific finished piece in mind and timetable vs. on military orders, I would rather go back with the Scarlet/Epic for efficiency being so close to the release.

So the timing dilemma continues.

How is his footage propaganda? Its just showing the people over there working and having some kind of a life over there. As they say there are three versions to every story; yours, mine and the truth. The video that was made just happens to be one view of how the people in the military are living and working in that area. Personally I think its great to see stuff like this in 4K because shooting at that high of a resolution future proofs the footage. So just like the footage of WWII it will be viewed some day as to see what life was like on that base, except the RED footage will still look as good as the day it was shot...maybe even better if RED keeps thinking of ways for us to process old footage.

To be honest I am not a fan of military. Guns scare me, the basic idea of them.

If a camera is brought in for documentary purposes it's a good thing. All other things I'm not interested in.

What I do have a problem with is how the picture is titled. Being badass? Why? Because he stands in front of an armed helicopter and is carrying a gun himself?
I'm not saying anything about the person depicted. He is a soldier (I'm not judging that, especially not here.), this is his professional gear. Why is it BADASS?
It can't be because he is holding a Red One because there would be only badass pictures around in this forum. So I assume it's the military equipment. No need to call that badass. It is sad we humans have to use stuff like that against eachother and we should never forget. I hope this camera will help to prove that point and nothing else.
Again, I have no problem with somebody showing this picture or Mr. Scott M. talking about his work in the military.
1. Awareness is important.
2. It does demonstrate how the RedOne (the reason we are here) is used in another context.

But I personally do not like things like that to be hyped.

That is one of my favorite REDuser pics. The rig looks like it weighs a lot with that lens. Plus carrying around that M4 with full gear...no easy task.

When I'm out shooting in AZ desert I don't roll as deep as Sgt. Scott Mathews but I'm ready.

Jesus Andrew, I knew you packed heat (from some of your previous posts and your pic) but good lord. This is crazy. I'm surprised you don't have a tripod mount for that gun too. :thumbup1:

If I hear a machine gun going off somewhere down Verdugo I'll know it's you.

Chris, believe me, I understand what your saying and where it's coming from. The vimeo video was edited for the "powers-that-be" to show them the potential. I also uploaded it online to guage public reaction, whether the public was even interested in higher quality footage, or whether society had basically just accepted the video/youtube look for this sort of footage. (I gave a presentation to the Combat Camera association conference using that video as well, the old WWII and Viet Nam vets told me it was the highlight of their week to see someone making the effort to shoot with history in mind, and that is my continued motivation).

I only actually filmed on the RED in Afghanistan for 4 days, and had very little to select from for the vimeo edit, I did edit it to soundtrack score (I had no audio recording capability at the time) and tried to make it "appealing" because I was appealing to higher authority to let me do it across the board (Afghanistan, Iraq, Horn of Africa) in order to capture as much footage as possible to be used in any effort of keeping the public connected.

I felt, and still feel that it is possible to shoot even in a combat zone with a little art/aesthetic of film production in mind (it is a visual medium after all) and that it doesn't all have to be haphazard or 3 angle broadcast style imagery that is the public's only way to glimpse what is happening.

.. No, it's badass because he's taking a RED into a warzone.

And yes the helicopter is pretty awesome too.

Na, a gun mount for the tripod would make it too heavy:biggrin5:. These kind of weapons I can only have out in AZ because of the laws in CA. So don't worry about machine gun fire coming from down the street. When I'm out in the middle of nowhere in AZ I just try and be ready for the random tweakers that think I might make an easy target. Being prepared has already saved me once from would be attackers.

Shawn, Scott,

As an American I'd like to thank you both for your service to my country and to our shared history. Whatever 'the right stuff' is, I'd say you guys have it. :patriot:

My whole family has served in the military. We are a military. My brother is joining the Air Force Academy. I can't serve because I am a type 1 diabetic but I have constructed a veterans memorial for my Eagle Scout project so I appreciate the sacrifices of others.

Cinematography is a passion of mine and I understand that the best footage involves taking risks, which is exactly what he has done. Stop ragging on him. I bet you would never have the balls to stick your neck out for your country.

And you know what is going on? That right, you have been there so you know. The troops appreciate it which is why your opinion is null and void.

Your right, that was out of line. Still, I don't appreciate the lack of respect this guy has for what Scott is doing. Ignorance pisses me off. Chris, I don't know you so I won't judge but don't turn other peoples hard work and dedication into a pulpit for your political agenda. There are plenty of forums where you can bad mouth the military. This is a tech forum.

Who's glorifying weapons?

As a former combat cameraman myself, I can say the weapon is standard issue and more important than the camera. (of course, I didn't look as cool with my Beta cam as Sgt. Matthews does with his RED.

Bottom line, there isn't a better pic out there of an operator with a RED. And this thread is about the pic.

I have no problem with the original pic. Do have a slight problem with someone saying it is baddass. It is just the mans job. Pictures of cameras in war torn arizona with guns ? Really not so sure about that.

I've filmed in war zones... Kosovo, Iraq, Gazza Strip, Bosnia and have seen at extremely close hand the hell that guns cause.

Where is Arizona war torn? They have some testing grounds out there but that's about it.
