  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Possible to export/save from RedCine back to R3D?

Would it be a possibility to export or save files from RedCine back to R3D format?

I find the color correction in RedCine to be very intuitive, effective and fast. In RedCine I am able to achieve heartbreakingly lovely gradings of shots almost effortlessly.

It would help enormously to be able to bring shots into RedCine color correct and subsequently export back to R3D with the color metadata attached.

I am specifically thinking here of a RedCine/CineForm/Adobe CS3/4 workflow but I suspect saving out of RedCine back to R3Ds might be useful to other workflows as well.

Am I dreaming?

Hi David:

Not dreaming, just not really understanding the process. R3D is a RAW format (what the sensor on the camera actually sees). This is why on-camera adjustments to ISO/ASA make no difference whatsoever in the R3D Raw file. They only affect the on-camera video out for reference purposes (EVF, LCD, etc.).

When you open an R3D in RedCine, click on the "Color" radio button on the left and proceed to make changes on that screen to OLPF compensation, White Balance, Color Settings, Exposure and etc., you are essentially "grading" or "color correcting" the raw data.

It would not make sense to then try to export the graded footage as an R3D file because by nature of the changes you made, it would no longer represent RAW camera data.

What you are really talking about is probably more like exporting a particular "look" or "LUT" (Look Up Table) that filters the RAW camera data for preview. Now, by clicking "Save" over on the far right on the "Color" screen, you can save your color adjustments so that they can be applied exactly the same to other footage or future footage. When you click "Save" there it brings up a save dialog with an extension .rcc which is a color settings file. You can also click "Load" in same "Color" screen to load previous .rcc files or color settings files.

It would be nice if there was a way to take those .rcc files and import them into your camera so that the EVF, LCD and other video output on the camera would have that adjusted look on camera that you plan to apply later on in RedCine. It would also be nice of those .rcc files could be imported into other programs. My guess is that will happen eventually.

Hope that helps. Please PM me if you have any additional questions.

A stumbling block to this is that R3D, at this point, is nothing more than raw sensor data from the mysterium (plus metadata), not actually an image format. I suppose that could change down the road, but it seems to me that Red are more focused on the format in terms of camera performance, as well they should be.

Thank you Shooter and Bassam -

Shooter completely hit the nail on the head (so to speak). Saving and then importing the .rcc into CS3 is exactly what I was hoping to do and was trying to say but just didn't do a very good job of explaining it. Your explanation, shooter, is so careful and clear - thank you.

My hope is to be able to be able to bring the RAW file (either transcoded to CineForm RAW (or possibly not with the hopefully imminent Adobe direct R3D import) and then apply the LUT (the .rcc file) I created for the shot in RedCine to the shot within CS3.

I understand from what you saying shooter that such a thing is not possible now but, hopefully down the line.

Many thanks again.
David

Thanks John T. as well... you posted while I was trying to write clear thoughts (which takes me some time)
