First of all, thank you for reading. I have some basic questions about using my existing gear with Red, and although I've read a lot of posts I have yet to find the exact answers I am looking for. There's a lot of rumors out there, it seems, and not a lot of well-catalogued information.

Secondly, please do not flame me for these questions or tell me I should buy/rent/steal higher-end gear. This is the gear that I have, and for a client project that had the budget I would certainly rent a full kit and probably a second Red. But a lot of jobs don't have big budgets, and I want to know how much I can do with what I have, especially for my own non-paying projects. It is essential to me, if I am to get this camera, that I not have a lot of hidden "oops" moments :-).

I've got reservation #2464, for:

A Red One
Basic Production Pack
CF Module and some cards
Red RAID
A battery
LCD
Nikon Mount

I already have another V-Mount battery and a dual V-Mount battery charger. I probably don't even need the one Red battery, but it looks badass.

I also have a lot of very good Nikon and Zeiss glass. Lenses are set.

I have decent sticks and a head that theoretically can support a Red One, especially if I don't hook up the Red RAID to it. It's a Manfrotto 519, and I've spec'd it out at 22lbs. In fact my current rig weighs about that, and it works just fine. That said, I may want to upgrade my head at some point. Just not quite yet.

Apart from the tripod head, my big concerns center around the rod system. I live in LA. Therefore, everything I have is 15mm. Not 19mm.

Most importantly:

My follow focus is a RedRock Micro 15mm.

Now, I've talked to one DP/Director who has rented a Red that had the RedRock Micro FF on it and he said it worked fine. He did not know what kind of adapters the FF needed.

My matteboxes are all 15mm ones, too. One is height-adjustable. The others are not. In a pinch, I can get the Red version of the RedRock Micromattebox. But I absolutely do not have the budget to buy a new Follow Focus as well.

Is it possible to use these items with the Red? Exactly which parts would be needed, and how would one attach these to the camera?

Would I use the 19mm rods and get an adapter for the RedRock FF that attaches to the 19mm rods and somehow allows the 15mm FF to work (and do the same with the matteboxes)? A Red One that I saw at SXSW had this, although it was using an Arri FF, not a RedRock Micro FF.

Or would I somehow use 15mm rods with the Red One instead of the 19mm rods? If so, wouldn't the height/lack thereof be a real problem for my accessories? I'm concerned about the RedRock FF gear reaching the lenses too, of course.

Again, these are basic questions and I imagine someone out here knows the answers.

Thanks for your responses.

Patrick

You can use 15 mm rods on RED, as I understand.

RED has not affected the sales of Sony/Panasonic.
If Sony & Panasonic were worried about RED, they would have already announced at least 35mm 2K cameras.

Can someone explain this phenomenon?

Explain the fact that Sony and Panasonic haven't come out with a 35mm 2k camera?

Why don't you ask them?

Even if they did, with their pricing structure, it would be $150k minimum and have half the features of RED.

Patrick,
your in luck! your 15mm gear will work with red. You may need to buy support from element technica.. otherwise get the 15mm adapter from RED.
RR follow focus can work (you may need to take off or turn around the PL mount ears). I would invest in at least 1 more RED brick. you can never have enough batteries on set.

Non-RED v-mount batts will power the camera but beware, only RED batts will give you % remaining, other batts will read AC. Also, with other batts you do not get the "powering down in 10 seconds" warning, it will just shut off. They can ruin shots if you don't pay close attention to batt life.

I'm in the same boat in a way. I already have a lot of 15mm/60 accessories. I'm debating about skipping the base production pack all together. Other than offering that flexibility if renting - what is the point of having a 19mm set-up that you have to adapt at the front to use all of your current gear? Plus you loose the Red handle since now at the front of your camera you have 15mm not 19mm. And you have to spend another $300 to make it all work.

I'm pretty sure Evin Grant decided to go all 15mm. I have a 15mm rod-set up, 15mm FF, & 15mm Mattebox. All you need is your RED to have the standard 1/4" hole in the bottom. Should sit just fine on a 15mm set-up - and save you $1200 (would be $1500 but you need a buy a battery mount - I planned on the belt clip version for $300.) Anybody know why this wouldn't work?

Hey Nathan -

Nice post.
My 2 cents - I would stick to RED batteries. Get the charger pack, one AC adaptor, maybe two spare bricks (for a total of four).

That's all I can offer up.

PS - I abandoned the 15mm world when I jumped into the RED world. No problems thus far ( I understand though you already have the accessories ).

I have used the RedRock Micro Follow Focus on RED with the RED 15mm adaptor. It works fine. I'm going with the RedRock Matte Box with 19mm RED option. I'm thinking I may be able to adapt the RedRock FF to 19mm by modifying a RED Universal Mount. If not, I'll go with the 15mm adaptor.

I'm a bit confuse about what I have to order on the redmicro website to have a workable ff set for the red? I already have the 15mm adaptor.
It seems they propose a bundle with a base plate. Do I need that for the red camera?
Apologies if it's a dumb question.
Regards
Brice
