  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Possible dumb idea.

Well, not directly answering your question, but I am considering powering my scarlet with an alternative power supply (already purchased an Lemo>XLR cable, which technically would be a cheaper version of the DSMC battery module. Not as pretty, but much more affordable with similar functionality.

Interesting thought...

I sold a few hundred DeWalt adapters for the Arri 16SR I and II cameras about 12 years ago, so it isn't a dumb idea, or a new idea.

Fragile Arri batteries cost about $400 each in the day, and would take 4 hours minimum to recharge from dead, often longer. You could get a hockey puck indestructible DeWalt 12V bat for $49 and recharge it in 15 minutes in the $99 DeWalt fast charger. So each time someone bought a used Arri, they discovered that all the batteries were no good, and it would cost many hundreds to recell them, so I sold a Long Valley DeWalt adapter.

It was great to know that no matter what, you were always 15 minutes from having a fully charged battery.

I think you could do this easily with Scarlet or Epic, but you'd have to look for some nice 14.4v LiIon bats. I think most of these on cordless tools have about 1/2 the power of a 90 wh Li Ion V or AB mount battery, but it might just work.

I was going to make a DeWalt adapter for the Red One but I think it would've taken 4 battery holders to get the same run time as a single Red battery. I went with a dual V mount that would hold two V mount Li Ion 90's for about two hours of run time and hot swappability and no airline restrictions.

Cheaper, even more mass-produced batteries. The good ones could be more durable and powerful for their size and weight I'm guessing.

Your answer is a lot better Douglas.

"I was going to make a DeWalt adapter for the Red One but I think it would've taken 4 battery holders to get the same run time as a single Red battery. "

good idea - but somehow not convinced.

Not sure what you mean, Axel. I meant that putting 4 DeWalts on a Red was not a good idea, it was a bad idea, so I didn't do it.

The Epic and Scarlet use less power than the Red One and now there are more high capacity Li Ion cordless tool batteries out there, so this idea might work with just one battery.

Don't get me wrong: I love to McGiver stuff !!!

My point is that often the workarounds turn out to be much more complicated than just buying the thing
that was actually made for the job...

If you are buying generic Lithium Ion V-mount batteries you can keep them within the airline restrictions
and they are not that terribly expensive....

Interesting Doug. I was just putting my cordless drill away and thought. Well there is a heavy battery that's probably pretty cheap. Just did some quick and dirty research:

Compare:

60 Wh cordless power tool battery $85
140 Wh Red Brick $450

I had been planning on making a DeWalt to XLR adaptor to power my Russian 35mm Konvas 1M, but never got around to it. The Konvas was a power hog and some people on the Konvas email list seemed to have success with it. Cheap, quick charge, and available at most any hardware store or Home Depot at a moments' notice. If a RedVolt can power an Epic for 30 minutes, I would think that a 14.4v DeWalt would do just fine. Do you still sell your DeWalt adaptors Doug? I didn't see them on your website.

Used to run old Arris off modified car jump start packs - they typically have a 12v 7Ah gel cel (although true rated capacity is probably half that)

Fared a lot better than the asthmatic Arri Nicad packs!

How about those LiFePO4 packs for electric vehicles? I have one on my electric-assist pushbike (built by pingbattery) they would be able to provide the sort of current a Red uses... and you could build them with whatever capacity you wanted... 20Ah... 40Ah, you name. it.

I have a bunch of what I call Universal DeWalt adapters . These end in a 4 pin XLR, pin one is neg and 4 is 12 or 14.4 volts positive. I use lovely gold plated Neutrik connectors, and I clip the adapter so you can use either battery. Great for powering monitors, remote heads, etc etc. You use a 12V DeWalt flashlight as the receptacle. I don't sell them anymore, just have too much other stuff to make.
