  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Portable 3D Display without glasses?

I have a 3D Fujinon FinePix REAL 3D W1 movie/still camera and I would think it uses the same technology. It is amazing but only one person can view at a time and you need to be directly center of the image to get the full 3D effect.

May just be the way of the future.
 
I saw it at NAB someone was using it at a booth. I liked it myself and plan to pick one up.
 
Autostereo is a very interesting technology that has been around for a long time. Certainly the Fuji W3 (far better screen than the W1) and devices like the Nintendo 3DS show promising applications for autostereo displays. As Darryl points out, there are some pretty serious limitations to current implementations however. Hand held devices seem the best candidates for this technology as their inherent use mitigates many of the limitations (one viewer at a time, easier to position the device in front of your eyes than it is to position your head in front of a screen, etc).

I find it unlikely that autostereo displays will be used in professional production any time soon. On set, there is just as much of a need to view the left and right images overlaid with glasses off as there is to view in 3D. Too many variables and too many opportunites for mistakes if you evaluate your L/R 3D on set images on an autostereo monitor. Not to mention, autostereo would always impact screen resolution.

Full resolution passive glasses displays are what you want on set. The best approach is to integrate a RealD/Lenny Lipton style "Z-screen" on the display. This is an optoelectronic switch that rapidly changes the polarization phase (just like a RealD projector) so no wireless transmission to the glasses is necessary and full display resolution can be retained. This impacts screen brightness, but a brighter backlight (LED) can compensate. Current shutter glasses based systems are not good for use outdoors IR light from the sun renders the glasses useless. Additionally, L&D would soar with these things being $200 a piece and frequently thrown around.

If you need a portable 3D monitor on set, get a Transvideo 3D View. Rock solid product, does everything a stereographer needs.
 
these are fairly common now, it is an australian invention from the late 80s from memory. since the patent assumdely has died therecseems to be more and more of them with different names, try ebay. The 3d ds uses it, which would give you some idea. fuji or nikon has a special subscription version with some resolution. resolution is bit low but we are exoectibg andriod tablet cimputers with 3d tjis year, and phones. earlier in the century shsrp had a phone and laptops with ths. I think there was some quirks repirted back then, sickness from lots of use i forget. a word of caution, dont set the 3d effect to high and dont let young children use it for any length of time (can wreck their undeveloped eyes convergence etc) as per industry guide lnes (look for advise about the 3d ds product and others). lilliput computers sell usb ones too in the states i think.

There is also the toshiba 3d technology, it works off a diiferent technology simulsr to the one i wanted to implement in the early 90s or late 80s. it canbe veiwed from different sngles without glasses but again you hsve to be a sweet spot. so you hsve to live with positioning youvhead well enough.and avioding hitting heads, which should work well with a little practice. i inderstand thst they hsve a shd 21 inch or something screen with it. this has just given me an new idea to do a wide angle view 3d screen while i was typing, jim uptp a little investment? i have many 3d screen designs i have come up with.
