  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Poor Man's Fujinon 19-90mm T2.9? Photo-lens alternatives

Another vote for the Contax 28-85...I love this lens! I know you originally said you needed something that went wider, but this is such a sharp, great looking, versatile lens, and the push-pull zoom makes it fantastic as a variable prime...so easy to reframe during interviews. As Nick said, it has 270º of focus rotation in correct cinema direction, and you can put an extra-wide 22mm gear on it if you want to use if with a follow focus (which saves time over the regular narrow gear because you aren't moving the FF as often). And it cuts together beautifully with other Zeiss lenses...

Sony just announced a new E-mount Power Zoom, 18-105mm at a constant f/4. It's also half the cost of the old 18-200, $598 to preorder at B&H. Could be a good lens to keep around for occasional ENG work:

Well!
This looks great! This is what I've been asking for for years, something 18-100-ish, APS-C size, F4 constant, image stabilization. Boom, done. Sony is driving me crazy, they are the only people serious about making lightweight/ENG-ish zooms for super35. I love what they are trying to do with glass, but I just don't like their bodies >.< (specifically, their color vs RED is:thumbdown::thumbdown:)

Really, this lens, with a manual iris ring and a 3rd party mount attached to a Scarlet, is exactly what I want. Is there any kind of super ghetto Sony-E to Nikon/Canon/PL/etc that I am just not aware of???

Chris, I wanted to resurrect this to see if you've found any other solutions? I believe that Sigma has a new 17-70 out, and that's what I was looking at. I still haven't found anything between the $1000 range and the exponentially expensive Fuji Cabrio or the new Canon 17-120mm Cine. The Tokina 50-135 is something I'll pick up, but I do need a wide zoom range for most of my work.

Hi Paul,

The best option out so far IMO is the $2500 Sony 28-135 F/4 full-frame E-mount lens with 3 manual rings, OIS, and supposedly good parfocal/breathing characteristics. This works out great on a fullframe sensor becoming an effective 19.8-95.6mm super35 equivalent FOV. But what fullframe E-mount camera can use it? An A7S for one... but meh on that.

Otherwise there's the APS-C sized 18-105 Sony f/4, but again E mount only and of course this one has no manual rings.

If Dulclos or someone can modify the 28-135 so we can stick it on RED or use it through a speedbooster then it'd be just about perfect. Otherwise the hunt continues.

About the speedboosters, forget them. There is currently not a single one that could be used on RED.

Speedboosters do only work when you are using a lens with a bigger focal flange distance than the one of your camera, hence there are only speedboosters for mirrorless camera-systems like m4/3 and Sony E. There is no speedbooster that can be mounted on RED.

A (F)E-lens-mount for Scarlet/EPIC would be a huge thing, but it's probably not possible without redesigning the body a bit, as it would need a shorter flange distance. And keep in mind, there was never a lensmount for Sony's A-lenses. ;)

I don' t think in the nearly three years since this was posted that anything suitable has popped up?

Rokinon to make Cine Zooms is my hope.

Currently there is sadly no 20mm for DSLR mounts from Rokinon. As I find that to be the biggest gap in their system :-/ :-( They need to fill the whole between 16mm and 24mm! :-o Then next make us cine zooms :-D Would love a 20-95mm T3 for S35 cine zoom from Rokinon. Too much to ask?? I could shoot an entire feature film with only that one lens! ;-) Basically it would be a cheapie version of the dreamy Fujinon 19-90mm T2.9

- Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro (OS) (1.02 LB) $500 LINK : My favorite option so far. Pretty fast, light, stabilization, good IQ, and combined with a Novoflex EOS/NIK adapter you get a manual iris ring. Cons are overall quality and lens extending when zoomed. Especially interesting if it could be cinemodded like the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8? UPDATE: Apparently currently has issues with OS and RED.
Hmmm... new price for this is down to US$399, often thought about this lens, maybe I should go for it.
The big issue for me is how can I set it to F4 and forget about it? Because if on my adapter to I set it to "wide open" then it will be correctly F4 at 70mm but when I zoom out the exposure would change to F2.8 :-( Which is no good at all! I want to treat it as a "constant F4" lens, so the exposure doesn't jump about as I zoom. If I can work out an easy way around this then I'd buy the lens.

- Pentax smc DA 17-70mm $600:
LINK Pretty cool, consistent aperture. 'Wrong' focus/zoom direction :/
The price is now down to US$349.95! :-o
Tokina and Pentax has a partnership to share some lens designs, if only there was a Tokina 17-70mm f4 for Nikon based on this lens then I'd leap at for that low price!

- Nikon 24-120 F/4.0 WITH a larger sensor Epic Dragon
(making the equivilent speed/range closer to a Fuji 19-90 on super35.) Manual iris ring, good range, good IQ, not parfocal, breathing, normal photo lens issues. Must have an Epic! (I use a Scarlet personally ;)
Quite tempted by this lens (has an even greater reach than the Canon equivalent), if only it was an AF-D version then I'd get it in a heart beat! Though likely I'll get it anyway one of these years...

The AF-D version of this lens is I suppose the Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 which is a tad bit even slower at f/4.5 and isn't that wide (28mm) or that long (85mm)!! If just two out of those three issues had been different then I'd seriously look at this lens. But as it is, if I'm already giving up a some reach vs a 105mm (or 120mm) then might as well lose another 15mm and get a superb NIkon 28-70mm f/2.8 instead. (another option is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, then I'm only giving up 10mm vs the Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5!)

- Nikon 28-300mm + Speedbooster: (1.76 lb)
$960 w/ speedbooster, manual iris (becomes 19.9-213mm f/2.5-4! ). Wrong focus/zoom direction, will it cover Scarlet sensor without vignetting? UPDATE: Reported that there is no Speedbooster compatible with Red cameras?
It is a crazy long reach with that lens! Pity it starts at 28mm.

- Sony 18-252mm SCL-Z18X140
Variable f/3.9-f/6.8 Aperture, lightweight (4.9 lb) $10k - Great option, little slow (don't know how fast you lose speed throughout range) but Sony only (F3/F5/etc.)
As I've got an F3 this would be wonderful! But waaay outside my budget. And I'd be worried being stuck with a very expensive FZ mount lens that I might not be able to use on my next camera and on the one after that etc... but if Santa was to drop this lens into my lap I'd be one very happy boy!!
