A while back, someone posted the perfect little mic that plugged into the side of the camera and recorded just enough ambient sounds for sync and reference when you didn't want to hook up a mic. It didn't even have a cable...it literally acted as an on-board mic that could fit into the XLR input on the RED.

Anyone know of such a thing? I've searched, but it's hard to describe this exact thing without a ton of other audio gear popping up.

Thanks!

Kevin

Ah, thanks Steve. I forgot the term "button" mics. That should help. But I am looking for one for the RED One right now, so if anyone has a recommendation, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

I think a wiser choice is to hire a sound mixer and have them send a wireless mono reference feed to the Red. That way, there's no issues with sound quality, especially if the camera is too far away from the actors (or interview subjects) to clearly hear the dialog. A low cost wireless transmitter and receiver can actually cost you less than a good microphone, especially a good-sized shotgun condenser with a shock mount, sometimes used for news footage.

Mark, no offense, but this is a different setup than what I'm mentioning here. We have many shoots where we hire a sound mixer. But we also have many where we're just doing b-roll or 2nd sound or sound into a different camera. I'd still love to have basically a fake "on-board mic" for those times we don't want cables or a wireless receiver on the camera.

I'd still love one of these button mic's for those times, but still looking around for one that would plug in via XLR.

Thanks!

A better choice for a camera-mounted microphone would be something like a Sennheiser 416 short shotgun, which is what a lot of ENG photographers use. A lav is totally inappropriate, because it's going to be omnidirectional, the frequency response will lack a lot of low end, and it's going to pick up a lot of handling noise. A shotgun in a decent mount and a windscreen will at least avoid a lot of these problems, and they're very, very widely-used in news and documentary shows.

Marc, I appreciate your post but I think you're missing the point to my original need. You may want to re-read the original thread. Thanks, though.

I did. If you use a cheap microphone, you're going to get crappy sound. You can either use my suggestion, or go to Radio Shack and buy any $10 mike you want.

"Reference" sound can mean anything from a phone line to crystal-clear high-quality. Your goal is kind of vague; are you trying to get something that can be re-synced with Plural Eyes or something like that? If so, the better the sound source, the more accurate the syncing. This is very much a garbage-in/garbage-out deal.

AUDIX 1250 Series , but you will make it short life sticking it directly on the side of Red .
so a bit of education about physics and what happen to mics/ mics inputs , under unwanted pressure , not to mention ,the directivity of your sound :-)
keep reading what people say to you first place
