I've not been successful in plugging a shotgun mic into the camera to record audio. I get some audio and a LOT of noise. I have been successful with a mixer. Is it possible to mic straight into the cam?

Remember to only use a Red cable if using phantom power, they have a resistor or diode or something to stop the audio circuit board blowing up, or something as a fix to a design problem - I think thats accurate, please check

Line level on release build 16 was very hot today. I had to have the sound recordist back off half way on the levels to not blow it out. Otherwise I've been successful on build 15 plugging a lectro wireless straight in. Mind you I have custom made xlr-mini xlr cables which may be the source of success / trouble.

Use the internal Mic power

Use the internal Mic power

We had the same problem and through trial and error found that we needed to turn off the phantom power and use the internal battery power on the shotgun. We also noticed the low levels when not using a mixer. Build 16 looks like it has fixed that. So if you're using Build 15 until your project is completed be cautious about boosting the RED levels the max. You WILL get processor noise introduced. Live with the lower levels and normalize the audio in post.

We're updating to 16 later this week and we're anxious for all the positive things we've seen. - Mike

Now that build 16 is in release, perhaps Red can turn some manpower into fixing the audio.

The mismatched level, requiring the Red cable with built-in resistor, is pathetic. Phantom power does not work. The Red audio section underperforms most $3000 prosumer cameras. All this can be improved with an external mixer, but matching line levels is problematic because of the unusual input impedance of the Red audio boards.

The image section is wonderful, and improving all the time. Now let's get a pro audio stage that works. Please.

edit - If this requires new audio boards, I would be happy to pay for that. Maybe an ET style audio box. Pots and meters!!!! not that hard.
