I'm shooting a project on RED soon which will most likely be internet and DVD only. So there is no reason to use the R3D files. 2K Quicktime proxies will be more than enough to deliver.

They will be editing, grading and finishing in FCP with the 2K quicktime proxies & for final delivery I'm sure they'll use FCP compressor to SD DVD and internet.

My questions are:

1. Will the dark gamma problem translate through even after the timeline (quicktime proxy) is compressed via compressor ?
It seems logical to assume that if the gamma problem is an apple/quicktime issue that it wouldn't "correct" itself upon being compressed via FCP compressor (which is also an apple/quicktime product). Wouldn't the gamma problem remain.

2. If they're monitoring the footage through a Panasonic HD-SDI monitor via a Kona 3 then the gamma should be correct and the footage should look right. Correct ? In other words the monitor within FCP would be dark (incorrect gamma) but the HD-SDI out panny monitor should be correct (proper gamma). If this is true then the grading should be done based on the HD-SDI monitor (that is IF the gamma problem doesn't follow through compression).

Others can probably answer this in more detail but I think the potential film like quality of the R3D files is not only in resolution, but also color depth and dynamic range. I don't think the QT files have these qualities, do they?

Curious to hear more info on this myself.
