I'm trying to grade my own material and am again dealing with the age old issue of how to judge my colors on non-industry standard equipment!

I'm working on a 3 year old MBP, which is my first problem. It's an LCD laptop screen, which im sure is inaccurate to begin with, but also changes brightness depending on how it's tilted, and it's only 6 bits.

I've also struggled with the "FCP color compatibility" option in QT. I was under the impression that when enabled it would make QT movies match more closely to RA, but instead it's making making them look more different (less contrast, little greener).

I recently bought a WD Media player and put some of my footage on there and then played it on my Panny 58PZ800U HDTV. Even on it's awesome THX calibrated setting, it looked way different than my laptop (brighter, less contrast).

So then I plugged my laptop into the HDTV and as my computer recognized the TV as a second monitor, I cycled through color settings in system preferences. It was default set to "Panasonic TV", but there's also a 2.2 setting. Clicking that, my blacks were crushed considerably, loosing a lot of detail.

Interestingly, there is also a "Color LCD" setting that matches my laptop monitor fairly closely (my laptop is defaulted to the same setting).

So my question is, where do I go from here? I would have guessed to use the 2.2 setting, but that means that the footage will look shitty(bright/no contrast) on my laptop and on the HDTV when not using the computer and the 2.2 setting.

Any one guide this poor soul?

THANKS! :)

Ignore the factory presets on your outboard monitor, your going to have to go manual... and calibrating your MBP display with an eye one is a good place to start as well, but for the outboard display, pipe some bars to it and use the provided link to help you adjust the deeper menu options until you get the bars right. Then you will at least be in the ball park.

You need to calibrate your monitor (and preferably, working with a better one than you are currently using) with something relatively inexpensive like Spyder 3 from Datacolor. It's very difficult to grade if you don't know if you monitor is displaying colours accurately.
