I am brand new to color, and I'm working with an epic, so I figured I would post in the epic and post sections.

My very simple question that stings my pride: How does one achieve the flat raw image straight out of
camera? It feels like the footage coming up through FCX / red-cine or resolve are all rec-709 already. Am
I just viewing the footage in the wrong color space? I'm sure this is the most basic question that has been
asked in a long time, but here's hoping someone can give me the answer or point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason. Native RED footage has the ability to change it's meta data so you can adjust many properties including gamma and color. The default settings out of the camera are typically Redgamma3 colour and Redcolor 3. These can be changed in in software like Redcine-x, Premiere, and FCPX. You may need a plugin that can be downloaded from the RED site to use R3D files in your NLE. A nice flat gamma setting is the REDLOGFILM curve.

RED has a great resource for all this info at: http://www.red.com/learn

Good luck!
