One of things that I love doing beyond shooting with my Epic, is playing with different ideas for post production with the r3d footage.
One of my most recent experiments has to do with the combination of the Red Rocket card in my computer along side the Atomos Samurai recorder. I decided I wanted to see about sending the footage out through the HDSDI port on the Red Rocket to the Samurai, then recording the signal straight to the Samurai.
What I found is very interesting, the image that I am getting through looks amazing, very clean, no noise, just looks awesome. (As long as it's not 2k 12:1, the compression looks horrible.)
The next thing I found is if the Atomos is set to read the SDI record flags from the Epic, the Atomos responds even when feeding it out of the Red Rocket card. So when I go to a r3d clip, and hit play, the Atomos starts recording automatically, with no delay, and creates a new clip on the Atomos. The timecode passes through correctly, but names do not yet as I believe this feature has not been enabled yet.
In anycase, not sure how practical this post methodology is, but it's nice to see that it works. May make a nice way to make a set of ProRes files, while being able to take advantage of the RAW benefits.
cheers
