Hi guys/gals,

I have finally managed to put on the Birger mount and headed of to the backyard with the 17-85mm EFs "digital" lens and the EF-25-II extender. I will upload some moving images once I get back to our T3 in Vegas, but in the meantime here are some stills...:

I will keep adding more later on...

I hope You are all getting some well deserved break!

:) Peter

Nice shots Peter,

Are you getting clean focus at 17mm? Just curious. My 16-35 is a little soft at it's widest but I expect that to change with the new adjustments being made to the inner Birger ring.

Thanks

Are you planning to keep the Birger on most of the time?

Ketch - Yeah, it was about time to clean the dust of the Birger... :)

Frank - There is that issue of the painted edge on the R1 mount base, but I have no problem with neither of my lenses. As with all still glass - try to stop it a couple of stops to get it sharper...

Rob - The Birger replaces the original PL mount (the complete assembly) and it contains a little "brain" to analyze the focal and aperture range for most Canon lenses attached to it. Then it allows for direct control of the aperture. For the moment we have to focus manually, but once ViewFactor starts shipping the wired & wireless control - You will be able to use standard follow-focus approach (both wired & wireless). For now You can actually control it from a Mac (or PC) via Bluetooth and custom SW. Zoom of course is completely manual. Hats down for Erik and his team - this mount is a true marvel - I can't get enough of it!

Tico - yeap, I am back in Mexico for Christmas. Hot and humid down here in South... :)

Mike, Tim & Kris - Thanks! Mike - You were one of the first ones to use this baby. Now, with outset of time, how do You judge the mount?

Tom - this particular body is not mine, I got it from Julian Banos till end of January. Hopefully by then I can sort out my financing and get at last my own Red One. I wish RED provided some sort of financing themselves - this could scale their sales up several folds. My problem is not credit score - it's simply cause I am foreigner - both in Mexico and in the USA. As such I can only rely on private funding. And that comes with strings attached. I just have to make up my mind about how many strings I am prepared to accept... But back to Your question - once I have my own Red One - the Birger will stay on 100% of the time. When I need to shoot something PL - I will rent another body until Scarlet S35 comes out...

Once again - thanks everyone for the warm feedback...

:) Peter

Great pics Peter, but I hope Julian Banos okayed you installing Birger on his RED One. You realise that RED still hasn't signed off on the Birger not voiding their warranty or the EPIC/Scarlet/audio board/ipin upgrades!! If you hadn't realised, you or Julian better contact RED asap!

Julian does indeed know about the Birger and RED did approve the mount without voiding the warranty. It seams that Your info is little out of date... :)

But I appreciate the concern...

Take care

Peter

Those are lovely bugs, Peter. You should check out my garden in Sydney. You could make a feature length film and a sequel

Well, actually it is not resolved as of yet:

AFAIK, they just said that for those who installed it prior to December 19 were OK for the warranty, but those that didn't installed it, should wait:

Thanks Dominique for pointing this out. It is next to impossible to keep up with that thread. The relieve is that we have received the mount 2 months ago and it was installed on the camera before the December 19th. But I was on a installation of 64TB SAN for a client in Florida (DEC 17/18/19) and then had to travel to Mexico and only now got the chance to take it out and shoot something with it. In any case I believe that Erik will resolve the issue with RED as I really don't see any reason why would the mount void the warranty when installed correctly following the detailed instructions.

I will speak to RED to confirm this. Thanks again.

Thanks Pawel, I do still have a house in Melbourne and I could make a 10-seasons series out of the biosphere in the backyard. I just love to see the tiny beautiful things that normally escape our eyes...

Hope You are all OK now and getting some work done in the water...

:) Peter

Doesn't efs lenses vignett when coupled with a full frame body?

Red one is not full-frame (still), it is full-frame-cine, which is actually almost the same size as the cropped sensors for which the EFs lenses were specifically designed. So You could almost say that the EFs lenses were made for Red One...
