So, I am interested if there is a ready solution for playback system. What I mean, is a complete system, that would take signal from camera, RED mainly, but any other as well, I would have support for 2 cameras, plus an audio signal from sound mixer, and a special software, that would capture both cameras, name them accordingly, also when I want to show director a shot, I do it from the same soft. It is just a brief description, but you understand what I need, I am sure people smarter than me would come up with more features than the basics I wrote here.

Thanks.

sorry if this was not the right place to post

well, i want to set it up, I am far away from you, so do not consider me as a competitor, I am in Republic of Georgia. Can you tell me if you set the system yourself, or is there at least a ready software solution, or a complete system I could buy?

We have this kind of system currently in final stage of development.

2 HD-SDI inputs
Audio support
DVI playback (cost effective monitoring)
Clip Database
Editing
Realtime Basic Color Correction
Realtime Overlay and Green/Bluescreen Key
Touchscreen GUI
Runs on Intel Mac

Estimated price $40k for turnkey system, $20k software only

also 40k-$:
Codex Portable.
I think it is available in small quantities since a couple of weeks.
Perfect machine if you ask me and has included transcoding for every editing system if you want.
Would have to figure out TC input (separate line) but that should be possible to solve with a cable.
OS, stability and features prove themselves since the big machine is on the market.

I think think the RED file recording is still in the works as there no way of getting the files RAW out of the camera => still waiting for RED.
But the compatibility was announced by both of them.
So long, they will happily record everything HD-SDI, also Dual stream and filmstream like Viper, D20/21, Genesis.

I saw the features working, great stuff they're doing.

I see this as a solution for playback, whatever the file format. Onset, the idea is to re-watch the shots for the director, the DP, the client, etc... This seems like a versatile and quick way to organize and playback shots.

Backup is another world. A pair of Nextos is a must.

Codex looks great with the release of the SDK many other products will pop up soon able to handle native R3Ds. Not sure it is possible to connect anything else except the Red drive to get the files out of the camera during recording though...

for a review/playback system 40k is too much, however you turn it.
It would be perfect and instant, but no matter if you call it Codex or Vladus' system, for review purposes it must be cheaper.
Since years machines for half of it perfectly fit the bill, whether it be DV, HDV or Hi8.
It should be kind of Quicktime based, maybe a Mac, but not for 40k (sorry Vlados).
Take a look at Vantage Films PSU, the guys who build the Hawk Anamorphics.

I second you on that!

not without the RAW port. But before I want that I want thermal stability of my FFD.

Who needs HD playback solution ?
hands up.

Clients do not. They want to see drama, either the actor or the chocolate flowing smooth. That doesn't need to be in HD and leads to unwanted and useless quality discussions. HD video village is a thing to be carefully thought through.
A producers seminar I recently gave manifested that. No HD for the review.
hence my conclusion: If HD is needed feed it via RED, if for review, downscale and record with oldschool technique: whatever you had before.

Ok but what is oldschool technique , i am looking for cheap solution
, sow i am ready to get SD play back , i really don not need to have HD playback for Director,
Sow i am looking for some easy and best solution for SD , to get database of footage , and to make some comments of footage .
And then easy show it for Director.
Some ready solutions for SD , links :)

HD Video Assist is needed, and wanted. Your thinking is a little behind the times. Just like the old days when DIGITAL video assist that had vari-speed playback came out, there were the producers/PMs who said, "You don't need to waste money on that, that will never last, all you need is a 3/4" deck 'coffin'".

Anyways, we have done HD Video Assist playback for many shoots, and once they use it once, they don't want to shoot HD again without the HD Video Assist. And it is only going to get more like that. Guaranteed.
