My business partner Jeff wrote about our Epic experiences in the last month or so. He said some nice things, Enjoy:

"It has been an exciting month for 5K Insight, and the word that comes to my mind is: “Inspiration.” Of course, this camera has already delivered, and then some. 5K Resolution has certainly knocked it out of the park, along with HDRx, high FPS, etc., etc.

But enough of that. Playback has arrived, and it was like the heavens opened up and I could see the sun again.

I have to admit, as a fan of celluloid and real film shooting, I didn’t think I was missing anything. Set operations have been without playback for a hundred years. Nobody complained, and even when video started to dominate the market, companies continued to utilize film for all the right reasons. And, when I’m not getting hounded to play back every take, then more time is available to concentrate on lighting, composition, and coffee breaks. Besides, I always have my reliable Red Station and portable laptop if a client really needs to see a take.

Well, the latest firmware update provided the playback everyone has been waiting for, and holy cow, did Red deliver. Not only does the playback feature offer the basics of fast forward and pausing, it has things I had never seen before. Loop playback, for example. And an In and Out Point feature, so you can set the boundaries of playback and avoid the time wasted on watching the AC clap the sticks (respect). Also, looping playback between In and Out points for that slow mo shot you want to watch over and over that’s really only good for two seconds. And, of course, reverse playback, list scrolling for that clip you shot two hours ago, HDMI 1080p monitoring, and up to 16x speed. Inspiring.

One more day of 2011, looking forward to '12!

Happy New Year Everyone

I'd be afraid of accidentally deleting something with a touch screen. You can't delete on the other camera that's used a lot for top quality work... you know, the other one.

Corruption becomes exponentially more likely when you delete sectors like this:

filesfilesfilesfilesfiles--DELETED--filesfilesfiles

But the danger goes down when you delete only the last bit recorded, as in

filefilesfiles--DELETED.

Ikonoskop (the other RAW camera no one talks about) has an interesting feature where you can only delete the last clip recorded. Might be interesting to see this on Epic/Scarlet, in KiPro-mini-style where you have to hold down user buttons a bit differently in order to engage the delete.

Deleting the last file recorded might be desirable (but with much caution and a lot of confirmation). But deleting files in the middle of the drive is going to lead to fragmentation, which, even in the SSD world is going to have an impact on performance. It is just not worth it. Let's please get over this discussion. It comes up every so often, but the facts don't change. It is a bad idea in a pro workflow.

Delete the last clip, yes (with appropriate hoops to ensure that it can't be done accidentally, even by the hypothetical 'idiot') but any other in-camera delete. Just say 'no!'.
