Hi All,

just shot on RED for the first time. Footage looks fantastic.

Having some issues though.

I can view footage in R3D and in Quicktime when I select the mov files in the .RDC folders.

I have installed REDCODE QT codec and REDCODE.QT component (which is a folder on my desktop - where to I drop it?).

I am rendering the mov files with settings:

Debayer Quality: Half Res High
Timecode: External
Look Source: Camera
Color Space: Look source
Gamma Space: Look source

Output Tab:
Output Format: QuickTime Mov
Quicktime Codec: Avid 1080p 115 8bit
Reel ID: Full Name

When I playback the rendered QT the image is all black (can hear audio).

How can I resolve this issue?

I am editing on Avid Media Composer 3.0.1

My specs are

Apple MacBook Pro
10.5.8
2.8GHz Intel Core Duo 2

Thank You!

What are you rendering the files with?

I am rendering with REDrushes 21.0.

I am actually directly importing the mov files from the RED folders into Avid and they are converting just fine and faster than REDrushes.

Excuse my novice question. Is there any reason why I should render the files in REDrushes first? This workflow was recommended by a friend who has more experience than me in RED.

Thanks.

I would compare a movie from RedAlert with the Avid ingested version. Depending on exactly how the Avid is ripping the files, color and Debayer quality may differ.

If you are going to color grade off the R3D files, it won't matter in the end of course - whatever workflow works.

The reason are the proxies (.movs in the Red folders) are not debayered and should be considered more of a "preview" type than final.

If you are only doing offline, than this should be fine, but if you are trying to maintain quality you should transcode the files.

Regarding your black files, you need to use Red Alert to check/correct the files BEFORE going to Red Rushes.

Sometimes the metadata gets confused and the frames appear black in Red Alert. If this is the case just reset them or raise the exposure/brightness/whatever that is making it black.

Again, make sure you go into Red Alert first and color correct. These corrections will automatically be picked up by Red Rushes, you don't have to save them. Just make sure Red Rushes is accessing the RSX file that Red Alert creates.

There is a good chance this is what's creating your black QTs.

Thank you so much. I will try out these tips.

Good to know about the debayer quality difference.
