Hi All -

Playback hell here - Just shot helicopter footage but needed to review all on the ground. Under Builds 15 (beta) and 15 (Release) - could only scroll back through the last seven clips or so before the camera hangs and has to be rebooted. Cannot play any clips from the beginning (47 of them) Any ideas if there is a solution in the works or a workaround?

Thanks

j.

well J,
11th of april my camera arrives, and i will test it for you if the same problem occur in build 15. It would be a pity.

Not had any such problems (Raid or CF). I wonder if, being helicopter stuff (vibrations ?), there may be some dropped frames which is not helping playback ... wild guess ...

CF reader

CF reader

I would use my labtop and a CF reader to review footage. Firewire 800 readers can playback real time medium proxys without a problem. Hope this helps.

having the same problem in build 15, studio no heli

I can playback fine in build 15 from a REDdrive, in 4k 16:9 25fps.
I have to skip back slowly through the clips, or it will show an error or crash.

Had a similar problem once - try scrolling back incredibly and annoyingly slowly & patiently (wait for the previous clip to load before you hit the back button again, give it plenty of time to catch up & settle). Were you using RedDrive or CF? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that recording to hard-drive wasn't possible on Peter Jackson's "Crossing The Line" helicopter shots (I think they ended up using CF for that?)

Hi guys - thanks for all the responses - the camera was on a tyler so there were no real vibrations to speak of (as it absorbs them pretty completely) - all the footage is fine - the problem comes if you try to scroll back through the clips - it is something that would not often come up but oftentimes people want to check a specific take for continuity etc. and in this scenario it would become a problem.

May I suggest that Red tech take a look at the skip function on the current build? thx.

Some questions : Are you shooting to a RED-DRIVE or CF, or to both ? This is happening when you scroll quickly between the clips, or just when you scroll back that specific number of clips? And your specific version of Build 15 is ?

Shooting to Red drive. we tried scrolling slowly but it seemed to get caught every time (usually got caught around clip 42 scrolling back from 53) - We tried this on beta 15 (2.2.1) and then upgraded on site to 2.2.5 release version. Same problem - we also tried dropping to build 13 but it refused to recognise the project settings.

EDIT - In redcine all the footage was fine BTW - the camera was on a Tyler mount and I was operating and can attest that no more vibration got through the system than on a steadicam. (I had 10 Cf in my pocket in case, never necessary) - just fyi

Thanks a mil,

Good to hear that. What resolution / frame rate / quality were you shooting ?

And was the RED-DRIVE almost full at this stage i.e by clip 50 ?

Most playback issues are caused by low battery voltage. Sounds strange but its true.
Playback from the Red Drive is very power intensive. When battery voltage gets low enough, the drive may lag. Any stutter in the drive will crash the camera's OS.
