  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We noticed today, on the third day of working with build 16, that the framing on playback doesn't correspond to the framing while shooting. We are shooting 4K 2:1 RC36 25fps and playback is set to 720p. The playback frame is off both on a Sony 1080 monitor and in the EVF. This is quite disturbing. I will be checking the .R3D files and QT proxies tomorrow when I get a chance, it's been a long day.

By the way no codec errors today, a couple yesterday and I think about five the first day. The first two days were in very bright environments while today the set was more moody.

Cheers,
Damien

Maybe a good old fashioned frame leader with a centre cross too would be in order (and there's me thinking that was all a thing of the past ).

By the way thanks to all the guys at the sharp end finding out these bugs before the rest of us make the big, non-returnable jump! We're avoiding it on professional jobs till it's out of beta but the more guys experiencing it at the sharp end the sooner it'll be out of beta.

Damien, we noticed that too. The DOP was concerned naturally. The .R3D and proxies will be as framed during shooting. Lim

Thanks twlim,

Yes the recorded files are fine, but it is troublesome to not have the right framing on playback. I haven't heard, or rather seen, anybody else mention this problem. Red Team are you aware of this ?

Besides the codec errors, and one ROCKET I/O error on the first couple days, and this playback bug, we've had no problems for the three remaining days of this shoot. I did one thing different, which was to change out the Red Drives more often. We had very hot conditions this week and they were getting extremely hot. So I decided to change them every few hours. To be noted, the first two days (when we got a bunch of codec errors) we were shooting a lot of very bright environments containing a lot of out of focus elements in the foreground.

Aside from these problems, I really enjoy Red Space and Raw View, as well as being able to see an image very quickly during boot up. I did notice one thing however, during the first thirty seconds where we have an image during boot up, the image is very green, then suddenly, before the end of the boot up process, it suddenly changes to normal. (We had the camera set to 5000K all the time.).

Cheers, and many many thanks to Red Team for their continuous efforts ans hard work to make our cameras better.

Are you using the HDMI output for your 1080 monitor?

No, HD-SDI. Framing is off wether in 720 or 1080 and in the EVF also, (I didn't check the LCD, but would be surprised if it was any different).

Damien, no surprise, the framing is off playing back with LCD too. Lim

We'll check that - what are you shooting ?

Hi Stuart,

What am I shooting ? As in subject matter or format ? I suspect you're asking for the format.

Format is 4K 2:1 RC36 25fps

Subject is a short commercial film for a high profile swiss brand of watches.

Additional comment : the playback doesn't show the whole frame, it is slightly tighter than the original shot.

Cheers,
Damien

Does this have to do with the cropping and scaling that is being used for playback now? In 1080 mode, the image is cropped to 3840x2160 and then scaled to 1920x1080. I haven't fully tested 720 playback yet, but I will.

Yes, it will represent the 16:9 safe action area of 4K 16:9, which is 3840 pixels wide out of 4096.

That allows the camera to do a real time anti-aliased downconversion to 1920 x 1080 progressive scan.

On 720p playback, the full 4096 width is scaled to 720p, but that's a difficult scaling factor for ideal quality.

Are you saying the playback shows the recorded image on the entire width of the monitor ? I guess that makes sense, our problem is, since we were shooting for 2.40:1 and had both an EVF and an LCD plugged into the camera, we had no framing indication on the HD-SDI monitor for the director. So we taped the frame guide on the monitor, therefore upon playback part of the frame, which is then using the whole width of the monitor, was hidden by the tape.

What we need is to be able have guidelines on the preview outputs even if we have both the LCD and EVF plugged in. Therefore we don't need tape, and the whole frame is visible upon playback.

Cheers,
Damien

Frame Guides.

Understood, but that is not an option we can offer at this time.
