  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Playback footage with LUT applied?

I noticed you can't playback the image with the lut applied on any of the new cameras? Will this be addressed in any of the coming firmware updates?

How are we suppose to possibly use luts in the field if this isn't an option? Are we just suppose to show a client a poor/flat image when they want to see playback and just tell them that the camera won't allow us to view it how it looked while rolling? I feel like that type of answer would reflect poorly on me deciding to use this workflow and prevent me from using a lut workflow or a Red altogether if it continues to be the case.

I also noticed that the lut needs to be manually applied to the footage in post for it to carry through the workflow. Is this something that can also be addressed with a camera firmware update or would NLE systems like premiere need to update their software on their end?

Have a separate monitor for client playback like a SmallHD702 lite with all the luts you need on it.

Red's whole ethos is about manipulating raw in a non destructive fashion to maximise image quality. The moment you start introducing LUTs to that workflow for more than monitoring you are engaging in destructive/subtractive maths. I doubt that Red would encourage that methodology.

A far more elegant solution would be to recreate your lut via redcine-x and then you can save it and apply it where it would be saved as a non destructive RMD sidecar file to go sit alongside the R3D and be called up and applied by any software that uses the SDK. But it would also give you the choice to alter your footage on a shot by shot basis in a non destructive way if you should choose to down the line.

This is unrelated to camera and NLE.

LUT is an external set of image transformation values which doesn't go into footage metadata and has to be manually applied.

Its good it does not get recorded to the footage but I see no problem why it should not show a lut if on playback. Sound awkward if you monitoring using a lut but cant apply it when playing back the footage in camera.

Im not asking to bake the lut in in a destructive way. Im asking for the lut to just continue to be applied during playback and during post. I want to be able to shoot red log film with luts applied and playing back log will be way to distracting. Adding another monitor to have to manually load the lut on to is not an ideal solution. I dont understand why Red cant just have it be applied to playback. This works with any other camera fine. C300, alexa, etc. the fact that you cant do this on Red bewilders me and will deter people from using a lut workflow with clients on set. The question is will this be addressed in a future firmware update?

The LUT implementation in-camera is relatively new for Red and I'm sure it will be developed further. What you're asking for isn't unreasonable and is something I'm sure everyone would welcome.

That said I don't know why it's a hardship in an environment with clients on-set to give them a monitor to look at material as opposed to getting everyone to crowd around a 4.7 or 7" camera display. Or to make a quick in-camera look that would be on everything via foolcontrol or similar

You asked

Which was the point I was making about destructive use of LUTs.
