  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Plasma, LCD or LED for Home

I have a Sony LCD and personally its one of the best pictures i have seen, but thats just my opinion.

Quick question. Does anyone have any good projector recommendations?

Have you considered a projector. Something like the Epson Pro Cinema 9350, 9700ub or even the 8350 makes movie night awesome. I have the latter. If you got the wall big enough, 1080p @ 220" sitting about 15feet away works nicely. Plus they can be calibrated. Personally I will always choose a projector over TV. The only warning is that you need a dedicated room were light can be controlled. But then thats a requirement for any monitoring environment, otherwise expensive LCDs or Plasmas doesn't make much sense. Just be careful if you decide to go the projection route TV & Movies can become very addictive with those specs. I can only imagine what will happen when Red enters the market with there Redray and Red 4k projector, i think i might die from an overdose.

Sony makes boner-inducing projectors using the same technology that their digital cinema products use, but they are very expensive. They don't have anything available right now because they are coming out with new projector products in the next few months but there will probably be some lower-priced models in the next year if they decide there is a market for it.

I'm guessing those models are specifically for home cinema usage and not for public venues as well.

If they're really boner inducing, it's probably better that way.

Yup. Hence the guess. Hopefully packaging between models differs.

I'm going to go with a 42" Panasonic Plasma.

Also looking for a Plasma set, although I found this article that focuses on long-term color and black/white level changes over time.

Panasonic (or other) plasma set owners, have you noticed this?

The rising blacks was really only an issue for the 08 models as far as I know. Our 08 model has it bad, and is quite washed out these days. My buddy's '09 Panny did not have it though; at least not anything significant. A new Panny Plasma would be a great buy today.

Fact: Plasmas - particularly Panasonic plasmas - are used as grading monitors in essentially every major post facility in Los Angeles. Nearly every television show currently on the air is graded on one, or at the very least QC'd on one, and that has been the case for at least the last 2 seasons. They're not perfect, but they're very, very good.

You can take that however you wish.
