  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Planned lens set for Scarlet-W

Has anyone had experience with using the aforementioned Sigma 18-35mm on any Full Frame RED?

The fact that it's an APS-C lens makes me tempted to sell mine ahead of my Scarlet arrival. How bad is the vignetting at 35mm if anyone here already uses one?

I'm a little confused at this. Scarlet-W is not FF35, but S35, and thus the Sigma should work quite nicely.

If you are indeed talking about using it on FF35 though, I found some test shots on another forum by user Aloicious, of the Sigma 18-35 on a FF SLR.

At 18mm, 25mm, and 35mm:

James. I used the 18-35 on epic mx at 5k. Was usable from 20-35. Scarlet W has slightly more crop then epic at 5k, so I'm assuming you will be good through the whole zoom range.

My apologies; For some reason I was under the impression the Scarlet-W was Full Frame...how embarrassing

I think a lot of people are confused, as each camera has a different sized sensor, and a ton of varying crop modes. It's understandable.

Since we're talking about stills lenses, at 5k, the MX sensor was 1.38x crop, while Dragon is 1.5x. Meanwhile APS-C is 1.5x (everyone except Canon) or 1.6x (Canon).

Point being, theoretically all APS-C still lenses should work nicely on Scarlet-W.

What the others said; if you can, get a set of lenses of the same make. Renting will probably be best for this, though.

I have a still lens background (Canon L series) but now I want to build a set of good cine lenses over time.
I am looking at the Canon CN-E series (14mm, 24mm, 50mm) and keep my L lenses for the long end.
But I am willing to look at Zeiss too.
Any info would be great.
thanks

Have you looked at the Rokinon Cine DS line? I ended up picking up the set from Duclos Lenses in LA and they have been really nice so far. The whole set was around $3,600 compared to that cost for one of the Canon Cine lenses and comparison reviews have found the Rokinons image quality as good or better than the Canons and Zeiss CP2s that I read. Just an idea.

Look for the new Sigma Cinema lenses at 18-35 and 50-100 to be must have lenses for the Scarlet-W. I run the 18-35 (non cinema) on a 4K camera and I could not be more happy with it. Improve the housing to cinema gearing and I will probably feel like I died and went to heaven.
