  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Planned lens set for Scarlet-W

Is anyone considering getting/using a set of Classic Zeiss EF lenses? Would Milvus be a better route? I had my eye on them and wanted to get them modded by duclos. What do you think? Anything else you recomment instead?

Especially:

15mm
21mm
35mm
50mm (already own)
85mm
100mm macro

I would definitely not remove the 18-35mm /f1.8 from your list! If you end up using a gimbal, crane or similar motion tool down the line (or even for action sports etc. where zooms are very useful I'm sure) -> The 18-35 gives you some incredible on-set speed advantages when shooting on a gimbal or other tool where rebalancing for lens weight, or simply where taking the camera off the rig to change lenses is an undesirable slowdown, without a compromise to optical quality.

The 18-35 literally lives on our camera for gimbal & crane shooting. Its a great focal range covering wide to normal circumstances, with great optical performance & speed. We've even used it extensively when shooting on 6K Dragon where vignetting is of course present in the wider focal lengths, but becomes quite usable from the middle of the range on (because the vignette suited the look of what we were shooting we even used 18mm on 6K Dragon and were perfectly pleased with the results.)

I mean it does depend on your priorities of course, if 'future-proof' full frame coverage is more critical or on-set speed. But in feature film work at least, speed can be so critical after all that this lens provides a meaningful boost to the efficiency of shooting, and so for us at least, is a critical asset.

The Milvus have improved coatings, which is meant to result in reduced CA, Flaring, ghosting etc. (IMO CA is very present on the classics) Also the 50mm & 85mm are new designs which are supposedly much better across the board.

I haven't used them personally but thats the word on the street.

Hope that helps.

Please excuse my dumb question.............am I correct in assuming that lenses fit for APS-C coverage (such as the Tokina AT-X 14-20 F2 PRO DX) will slightly vignette with the Scarlet-W?

The xeens have just been increased in their line up to 5 lenses for the complete set.

They added the 14mm T3.1 and 35mm T1.5 - both cover FF 35.

Next up in 2016 will probably be the 100mm macro or the 135mm to complete a nice set of 6 lenses.

I have the 11-20

i like it a lot more than the 11-16 I used to own.

Cool, thanks. I have the Rokinon 14mm, its ok. Might wait and see how the new 14-20 f2 is in comparison, if same quality I guess it comes down to a little wider and slower, or a bit faster without the 11-13 range.

if you thinking of shooting till you die, you maybe will think of investing in gear, you can't invest in camera, it will apparently go cheaper, but some lenses are good investment, you are going to spend your money anyway...

The toss up between the Tokina 14-20 f2 and 11-20 f2.8 is killing me.

I want the faster lens, but the fact that the small range overlaps with the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is a bit of a piss off. I wish Tokina had opted to go with a 13-18 f2, but it is what it is.

Decision time soon.

I'm used to shooting f2.8 Canon zooms on FF35. The DOF of the f2 on S35 is very close to that of f2.8 on my FF35, so I think I'll likely opt for the 14-20 f2, but I keep having reservations.

I have a still lens background (Canon L series) but now I want to build a set of good cine lenses over time.
I am looking at the Canon CN-E series (14mm, 24mm, 50mm) and keep my L lenses for the long end.
But I am willing to look at Zeiss too.
Any info would be great.
thanks

I am starting to build my Milvus collection and I just got in though 50 1.4. I haven't tested yet but the build quality is superb of course, next I plan to get the 85 and then the 21.

I plan on mixing Zeiss Otus and Milvus. Duclos modded of course. Also some Canon L zooms for versatility.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE for Canon EF Mount
Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE for Canon EF Mount
Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE for Canon EF Mount

I'm assuming there will be an Otus 35mm 1.4 and a 100mm eventually. I also want a fast wide angle prime that covers FF/Vista Vision if anyone has any recommendations.

Has anyone had experience with using the aforementioned Sigma 18-35mm on any Full Frame RED?

The fact that it's an APS-C lens makes me tempted to sell mine ahead of my Scarlet arrival. How bad is the vignetting at 35mm if anyone here already uses one?
