  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

[FS: OPTICS] PL to PL mount 2x teleconverter

What does it weigh?

Hello Manuel,

I am looking for a PL x2 extender for our Red 17-50mm zoom with our Red Epic.
On different models on the market, we asked MTF, which confirms that their model is not compatible with the 17-50.
We await the response from Schneider. (MFT claims that their extender is identical to Schneider, therefore no compatible)
And for your model ... in your list, the 17-50mm is not there.

Christophe (from France)

Does this only work for 50mm and upwards on a zoom?
Can we use it on the wide angle side (for instance the 20mm setting) on a Cooke 20-100mm?

Hi Christopher:
I will like to answer your question on the best way, but I never had a RED-PRO zoom 17-50mm on my hands, dued here in Barcelona rental houses do not have this lens because seems DOP prefeer other manufacturers like Zeiss, Coke and Angenieux all the time.
I researched a bit online about your zoom.
Seems rear glass element is inside the PL stainless steel mount, it makes that rear element glass is about 10mm rear the pl flange plane, and my teleconverter accepts up to 16mm. This means that phisically you can use my 2xTC with your zoom. (for measure exactli the distance you can measure the distance between the ground plane of the PL ears to the end of the pl mount (a), measure the distance from the end of the PL mount to the reaar lens glass element (iside the PL) (b), then the distance a-b must be less than 16mm to be OK for my 2xTC)
The optical rendition of the nikkor tc 200 lens block of my teleconverter is fantastic, and it will give you very good quality images with your RED 17-50.
But on the other side I need to know if the rear element of your zoom is always on same place or if it will move when you zooming or when you focusing.
Other aspect, is if your zoom have metadata electronic pins on the PL, my extender will not transmit the metadata to the cámera.
Let me know about it.
Best regards from Barcelona.
Manuel García.

Hi Cayton:
It can worrk correctly on a zoom on the wide angle side (from 20mm), and it can work correctly with a Cooke 20-100mm all the focal range, due cooke rear glass element is stationary on same place all time, and it is less than 16mm from the PL flanfle plane.
On primes is diferent due vitually all the focals under 50mm protrude more than 16mm from the flangle plane.
Best regards from Barcelona.
Manuel García.

Hi, do you have access to any S16 lenses you could test this with? I have a couple of nice S16 zooms, Angie 20x and Optex 33x, and I'd like to expand the image circle to cover 4K...

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike:
I have no way of testing these zooms, because they are not common on rental house here in Barcellona.
However, if you measure the distance between the PL ear on the side of the frame and the end of the zoom body (element rear), and is less than 16mm, then you can use the TC with good results.

Have PM'd and emailed several times since 6th May... I've had no no reply from you. Shoot me an email via the contact details below..

Hi Felix:
I could not to see your e-mails because gmail send your mails directly to my spam folder (your attached information about your company make gmail program thinks your mails are spam).
I wrote you yesterday to your e-mail.
The TC is still for sale.
Sorry for the affair.
All the best
Manuel García.

Saw you said these work with Super Speeds MKII 85 up. What does "up" mean? I think of up in numerical values. So that would be 100, 135, etc… but there are just 5 focal lengths in a super speed set and the 85 is the longest. Would you mind clarifying what you meant?

The TC covers Dragon Full Frame?

If I can use this on my super speed set, I'll take it off your hands. 18, 25, 35, 50, 85.

Why you need a 4x? for extra tele or for extra macro?
Yes, With a 2xdiopter and the 2xTC you will obtain a 4x image.
Other option is to use two 2x teleconverters one rear the other, you will get a 4x image, but you will loose 4 stops.
I can offer you a second one, and if you are really interested make a image proof to you with 2xTC + 2xTC.
All the best Manuel.

I thought TCs didn't work with Super Speeds without touching the back element.

Hi Will:
The teleconverter has been tested by a rental house friend on his superspeed set and he said me that it works well on the 85mm (without touching the rear element).
As you said, zeiss superspeed mkII and mkIII complete the set with the 100mm T2.1, the 135mm T2.1 and the 180mm T3. And the teleconverter works perfectly with its from 85mm to up. (specifiaclly 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 180mm)
Yes the TC covers Dragon sensor. The TC optical block is designed to cover FF. It means that all s35 lenses you can use with it, will cover Dragon sensor.
Hope answer your questions.
No doubt ask me if you have any question more.
Sincerelly regards from Barcelona.
Manuel

I am not sure this will work with Aluras...?
Have you tested this combination?

Can't believe this TC is still around. I'd take it if I had an immediate job for it. Thanks for the kind replies Manuel. Best of luck, still in the back of my mind.
